Turn by Turn directions no voice using Bluetooth

I've got an 4S running IOS6. Maps works, Siri works, sound works. Turn by turn directions work over the phone but not when Blue Tooth is turned on. The other Blue tooth functions work fine in my car, a 2010 Ford Flex with a built in GPS system. Any suggestions?

Yes. sorry I wasn't more clear. When Blue tooth is turned on on the phone, the Maps app offers a chooice to play the turn by turn directions over the car's Blue tooth or from the phone. While the Bluetooth system works fine for phone calls, music and other uses, the turn by turn directions will not play either on the phone or through Blue toooth when Blue tooth is turned on on the phone. When I switch Bluetooth off, I get the turn by turn directions from the phone's speakers as intended.

Yes, the Flex has the Sync system. It has not always played nicely with my iPhone, being a MS product. But the Bluetooth function works well with the Bluetooth on the Iphone 4S for other uses.

Bluetooth may not be fully intergrated with the Maps App yert, but when Bluetooth is turned on on the phone and you press the "start" button for turn by turn directions, a Bluetooth button pops up in the Maps app, offering the choice of play over Bluetooth or play ovewr iPhone, that's similar to the sequence for phone calls on the iPhone when Bluetooth is engaged. Unfortunately, with Maps, the voice directions do not play with Bluth Tooth turned on no matter if you select play over phone or play over Blue Tooth. If I turen Blutretooth off on the phone, so that it is not available for any function, the voice turn by turn directions work fine over the phone while in the car.

So, it could be something specific to the Ford Sync system ort it could be specific to the Maps app. I'm interested in learning if other have run into this and what a solution might be, thanks.

John,

I just tried this with my 2012 Lincoln MKZ that also has the Sync system.

At first, the system behaved as you described in your original post. That is, there was no sound from the phone or the car speaking the turn by turn directions. However, I then changed the input source on the car's audio system to Bluetooth (the default was "Line In"). I'm not sure if your system is similar, but what I did was push the Media button and select "BTST" (Bluetooth Streaming) on the display panel. After making the settings change so that the input source was Bluetooth, I could hear the iPhone voice and turn by turn instructions from the phone on my car speakers. I also noticed that in addition to the turn by turn directions, I could also hear any music that was also playing by Bluetooth from the phone.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, that sounds like it may be the solution. I'll try it. Do you know if Bluetooth worked with other phone functions before you tweaked the settings? Just asking since mine does.

You mean connectivity between the car and the phone for phone calls? Yes, that was functioning. I believe that runs on a separate Bluetooth frequency that is separate from the frequency that connects Bluetooth audio.

I'm a little jealous.

Bluetooth has different "profiles" for performing different functions. My 2008 Prius supports the "phone" profile - either Headset Profile HSP or Hands Free Profile HFP. I'm not sure whether its one of those or both.

But my 2008 Prius does not have the "headphones" or Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) that enables audio streaming. I hope Apple Maps gets an update so that it can send the directions through the Bluetooth phone profile. I think that would enable me to listen to my car radio, and have Maps interrupt it with the turn by turn directions, even though my car does not support A2DP.

Currently, if I start Siri while bluetoothed to my Prius, Siri uses the car's radio and microphone. So if they can make Maps do the same thing, I'll have what I want.

I've also noticed the exact same issue with my iPhone 5 and 2012 F150 running Ford Sync. While switching to Bluetooth as the primary audio source technically fixes this issue, I'm disappointed that the system doesn't support true connectivity for turn by turn navigation. For me, in order to be fully usable I'd like to be able to program a destination in Maps, set its output to Bluetooth, and then hear the periodic voice cues over the vehicle speakers regardless of which audio source I'm listening to. I know this is technically possible because the Ford Sync system is capable of ducking the vehicle audio (no matter the source) for incoming phone calls or if I get an email just to play the new mail sound. I understand that there's two separate Bluetooth systems at work here, but I don't know why. Anyone have an idea why they'd deliberately engineer in this kind of limitation? I guess I'm pretty spoiled if my chief complaint is that I have to listen to Bluetooth steaming as my only audio source whenever I'm navigating with Maps, but in my case Bluetooth streaming simply isn't a valid audio source, especially because the '12 F150 displays zero metadata in this mode. Any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks!

In my 2008 Prius Google Maps on the latest IOS is interrupting the radio for turn by turn navigation updates while Apple Maps is not. Wahoo! I think the prompts in Apple Maps may be a little bit better then the prompts in Google Maps, but I'm so happy to have Google Maps interrupting the radio to do it.

Same issue w/ Maps in my 2011 Volvo XC70. Volvo claims it's not their software. Siri when interacting with user and Maps plays thru the car speakers but then Maps turn-by-turn directions do not. New Google Maps turn-by-turn directions do automatically play thru speakers via Bluetooth. Apple Maps keeps improving and hopefully this issue will be addressed in the next update along w/ other Bluetooth shortcomings on iPhone 5 & iOS 6.
