@, let us know what happens if you reboot.
It all turned to crap
I shut down the mac mini and the ipad 3. Powered them both back up. Music starts up blank. Connected to shared library. 30+ secs of the spinning gear. Then an album list that I can tell is way too short due to the lack of albums that start with A
Only 79 Albums out of 468 ....
So what the heck happened going from:
Music in iOS 6 connecting to iTunes 11 showing about 100 out of 400.
Yesterday. Updating to iOS6.1 and Music showing 450+ albums correctly
Then today restarting both the iPad 3 and iTunes machine and poof.
= Worse than ever?!?!
By the way the Remote App spins for 5 secs and starts populating it all properly in mere seconds. None of the missing items and delay issues that Music has.
Connected iPad 3 to another shared library (machine with optical drive doing ripping duty) and it showed several hundred albums.
iPad 3 - Settings - Music - Signed out of home sharing.
Quit Music app.
Restarted Music app (starts blank, only conntect to iTunes store)
Quit Music app
Settings - Music - Sign in to home sharing
Start Music app
Connect to home share ... Music populates with about 461 albums (roughly 23 screens of 20)
Now, what makes that procedure work today, when it didn't work for me in the past?
Yesterday no luck with the musicapp : didn't show any shared library, but crashed each time I wanted to access the iTuneslibrary on my windowsPC using the musicapp on the iPad! So tried it again to day. First logged out and in homesharing in iTunes on my PC. Then logged out and in homesharing on the iPad. Next started up the musicapp on the iPad and tried to access the library that's on the Pc. Everything appeared : all albums, songs and artwork, albeit slowly! 'Yeehah' for now that is, I guess : we'll see what happens further on.
Strange that with the same gear and the same ios(updates) things seem to work out differently with different problems for everybody.
Update (see my previous post) : checked the musicapp on the iPad. All songs and albums are still there, but the artwork has dissapeared. Changing the library to the iPads library and back again to the library on my PC, only did appear a few albumcovers. Most of them are blank.
So, still troubles in paradise :(
Here is my experience since iOS 6.1 update:
Whenever I access homesharing from my iPad the same few albums appear all the time, if I click on song it says all the songs are here but when I start browsing them I see about 100 songs with names next to them that I can play and then hundreds with numbers but with empty names, they don't even play so it is false indication that the songs are there, they are not.
My fix, I sign out of home sharing in settings under music, close the music app, sign on again and open the app access home sharing and everything populates again, search still crashes the app. If you don't use search everything works fine and you can play any song and close the app keep it in the background and you don't lose homesharing until you close the app manually. once you do it is the same story all over again of seeing only few albums, but at least if I want to listen to something I know how to get it.
I also hav anoter fix, all my music is in google music and I have an app for google music, so if iTunes and Apple don't get a permanent fix, I have no problem switching to Android...
Homesharing is such a moody biatch!
I changed my windows account having now full administrator rights. Uninstall/reinstall iTunes, opened ports in router firewall and it works for a day now. Full albums and artists. Search working too... most of the time...
...the one thing, if I search for example "Black Rebel Motorcycle Club" in albums and type in "Black" really fast, the app is flickering shortly between the B and the L but is not crashing. If I type it very slowly, like B...then wait a sec and then L, it crashes. This is so much fun! *lol
I've never had anything of an issue like that in all the years working on computers. There are so many different things, that are not working, then working before not working again, I can't make sense of it.
Yesterday everything was just working fine. I went out with my iPhone (all systems kept running), came back 2 minutes later and the music app is only showing (always the same) 156 albums out of 1000 and only (the same) 7 artists, but all titles - as I reconnected to my liberary. The same on my iPad (as I reconnected to the liberary). That is fragging crazy!
But there must be hope. A friend of mine has a similar system (iPhone, iPad, Win7 64bit, same iOS) and it works... everything, and I mean EVERYTHING. And here's the kicker, he didn't even know or use homesharing before I told him.*lol
I have the exact same issue. By logging out of home sharing on the iPad with iOS 6.1 and logging back in I can now go to more/shared and see all of my 426 albums and the art work.
BUT BUT BUT: If I try to do a search with list by artists on or off in any view album or list I just type the very first letter for the search and within a few seconds crash. And just like you, using the remote app everything is perfect! Search works great so this must be a bug in the "music" app for iOS 6.1 (And I had this problem in 6.0.1 as well).

I did not try deleting all the music on my iPad and then testing to see if I could search by using home share. I will do this when I get some time but for now I certainly can play all the songs on my iPad and then switch to home sharing and play all of the songs on my Mac on my iPad. I can do both.
What I can't do and what must be a bug in the iTunes app is I cannot search home sharing on my Mac from my iPad.

And now for all who have problems with crashing music app on the iPad after using "search"
1. Connect your iPad via cable to iTunes
2. Go to the music tab and uncheck synchronize music
3. Apply and/or sync (delete music on your iPad)
4. Start Music app on iPad, connect to homesharing and voilà...searching at least!
It's crazy, I know, but it works!
I guess it is not possible to have downloaded music on your iPad and use homesharing together. Which is ridiculous.
So once again, delete all music on the iPad and...
...please tell me, if it works for you (all)!
everything else is working fine, too, since I've done this!
All albums and artists, no missing album arts and no more errors in the eventmanager.
Here's my experience on your idea.
I've never loaded any music on my new iPad, and I even deleted the few sample songs that came with it. I always intended to source all music via the Shared Library on the iMac. Yet iPad still crashes when searching. My guess is your joy will be short-lived.
The AppleTV is immune to all these problems however.
