Q: Home sharing not showing all songs and albums

Having a bit of an issue with home sharing and it's driving me nuts as I just can't seem to solve it.

I enabled home sharing today as my mrs wanted to listen to music on our iPad while she was cooking.

Now here comes the issue, all songs in the iTunes library are showing under the songs tab of the music app but nothing will show under the artist or album section so I don't get any album artwork etc. How ever on my iPhone they show up under albums and artists tab.

The only way to play a song would be to look through the entire library where I'd rather just select the album.

Does anybody have any idea why this is doing it?

Some basic info on my setup.

Ipad 2 running ios6 and latest iTunes installed on a pc.

Pc is hardwired into a wireless router.

All music is stored on my NAS.

iPad 2

Im begining to wonder if us users have misunderstood the concept behind it seeing as so many have the issue and it still remains unresolved.

Perhaps at design and implimentation stage it didnt have a name and the bug was identified but couldnt be fixed.

The simple solution provided was to leave your house and go to a fiends house who didnt yet have the problem.

From this the term 'home sharing' was implimented

Oh my god. Thank you so much to everyone who helped with input on this matter. I was becoming so frustrated because sometimes all my music would show up on my iPhone but not my ipad and I would just use my iPhone for music, despite liking the ipad 100x more, and then all of a sudden I couldn't get it to show up on my iPhone either. Thought it was an issue with my wireless configuration, or windows, but after reading the discussion I:

    1. Signed out from home sharing & iTunes on all devices and my computer

    2. Exited Music App on all devices

    3. Went to Preferences on ITunes (computer)

         / Under advanced tab

/ And checked the box next to "Keep ITunes Folder Organized"

/ And made sure "Copy Music Folders to ITunes when adding new music" was also checked

    4. Signed back into iTunes account on my computer and reactivated Home Sharing

    5. Signed Back into my ITunes account on all my devices and enabled Home Sharing

    6. Reopened Music app, went under shared, selected appropriate library and

Yay!!!!!!!!!! Finally works on all my devices like it should. All my music shows up, not just some artists and streams better than ever. In the past when I had problems displaying my entire library when I tried to play the music it did show it would frequently play for 2 seconds & stop, play for 2 seconds & stop, etc., so thankfully everything is back to normal.

If anyone still has problems or is looking at this for the first time, the above directions  (just organizing info from previous posts) is what worked for me and hopefully for you too.

    Peace!!

This happens all the time. As long as your Home Sharing is on and all your devices are connected it will work. I have to log out and log back in (only on my device) the home share in order for me to be able to view all my content in my library. There's no perminent fix. I use my ipad to view my music and to stream. I always have to log off then log back in. *****

    Unfortunately it is temporary.

Some of use have had those option enabled from the get-go. No permanent fix. Even logging in and out from all devices doesn't always work. No explanation. I always get all my albums in any app in iOS5 !!!! But, with iOS6, I only get all albums in Remote, and typically a fraction in Music (of 100 or so albums)

In my personal situation, this problem started happening when I turned on "Share my library" on my Mac (where my iTunes library resides). This was in addition to Home Sharing.

I think there's a conflict there, between the two. I turned on "Share my library" simply to have my library available on my Windows PCs without turning on Home Sharing there.

So, if this is happening to you, check this:

    > Sign out of Home Sharing on all your devices by going to Settings > Music > and sign out of Home Sharing.

    > Kill the Music.app on your devices.

    > Where your library is located, turn off Home Sharing.

    > Where your library is located, see if "Share my library" is on under Preferences > Sharing. If it is, uncheck it. Heck, see if this is enabled on any of your Macs or PCs -- you may have to disable it there.

    > Turn Home Sharing back on wherever your library is located.

    > Sign back into Home Sharing on all your devices.

    > Open Music.app on your devices, and try to access your library.

This did the trick for me.

Yea . . . it still is full of odd glitches.  What works one day - might not the next . . . it DID work in previous versions of iTunes and older AppleTv ( before there was a number ).  See : WORKED

Shamefully the older versions of iTunes don't play with the newer iPad / iPhone Apps so once more SOL

Now the ability to play / cache / see an entire library is still a hope and pray Reset this / turn this on / off / all while standing on head facing west during the sunset if the month ends in a ' y ' etc . . . ( and still after several months of searching for a real fix that makes it all work again )

Richie...you forgot to add that the leg the dog uses to scratch its fleas will also affect whether or not Home Sharing works properly.

I'm having these same issues and I'm not sure I've ever really had it work.  Even when it would partially show my music and could play, it took so long to load I usually gave up.  It's really sad when it's 10 times as fast and way more reliable to use Google music player to stream from the internet rather than music that is my house, about 10 feet from me...

To be fair, I have never had any speed issues with it.  For me, it's been just as quick as using local content, and in fact streaming 24/96 lossless audio files works perfectly.  So no speed problems at all.

Unfortunately that is no consolation when only a quarter or your albums show up and all the art work is wrong.

Has anyone any theories as to why Apple seem completely disinterested and have shown no desire to do anything about this?  I think it's pretty **** poor to be honest, having software that is broken like this, lots of people complaining about it, and doing **** all about it.

I have had a similar problem.  When I first started using homeshare last year everything worked fine. But as my collection grew and I moved new media data on to an external hard drive movie app and music app on both my iPhone and Ipad would crash.  The other thing i noticed that as my collection got larger it took for it to load, now it doesn't load at all.  However, I have never had this problem with apple tv.  the music and movies always load to apple tv really quickly (although it has slowed slightly, as the collection has grown).  So my conclusion is that is definitely a problem with the ios6 software, on both the ipad and iphone.  I am going to try yoyohambone's advice and see if that works, but if not, I am just going to give in and by another tv and another apple tv.... harsh.

This thread is so long, not sure if the issue I've had is included: the songs on one album in the PC library showing up in the ipad music app as being distributed among multiple "albums".  Finally realized the solution - which I have seen mentioned somewhere, maybe above - is simple.  In iTunes on the PC, the ALBUM ARTIST must be the same for every track.  Even if it's only "various."   Works for me.  Agreed PC to ipad home sharing is finicky, but it does work.  -Ron

Useful info Ron.  But to say PC to ipad home sharing "does work" is really not correct.

It works for some of the time, and then eventually - usually after a few days - stops working and loses many/most of the albums and starts misplacing tracks and artwork.  This is not isolated to a few random people with unrelated issues, it is a consistent, reproducable problem.

    Hi.

I have had several problems described on this post.

    • My iTunes Music Library on my Mac was only partially available on iOS devices
    • Some (most) albums showing covers of another album
    • Most of the albums visible on iOS devices were displayed in the "Albums" pane, but not on the "Artists" one (actually only 3 artists were displayed on that pane).

The cause seemed to be a corrupted iTunes Library ("iTunes Library.itl" file)

I found the following article on Apple support site:

iTunes: How to re-create your iTunes library and playlists

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1451?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

I followed its instructions: MIRACLE! My Music Library is finally entirely and correctly visible on my iOS devices.

At the time being, I found 1 drawback: video files that were in the "Home Videos" subfolders got lost from the iTunes library.

The workaround I found was to move those files out of this folder (onto the Desktop).

I then dropped them on the iTunes application which re-imported them.

If you have a large amount of files on that folder, this step can be very very time consuming, but maybe this issue won't affect you.

I then deleted the video files on my desktop.

    Hope this can help.
