How do I display all my contacts in separate groups?

I have just synced my new iPhone 5 with my MacBook Pro. The iPhone successfully lists all my contacts, but they are now displayed in one long list. However, my previous iPhone 3GS listed contacts separately in various groups. Nevertheless, when I select "Groups" in the upper left of the app, it does list the previous groups. Note that contacts on my Mac are listed in separate groups.

Suggestions?

I have over 1,000 contacts related to work, etc. So, I created a number of folders in Contacts on my MacBook Pro that have allowed me to place the contacts in various categories, making the contacts easy to find. The same folders have always appeared on my iPhone 3GS.

With my new iPhone 5, the various categories remain, but in order to see only contacts in a single category, you have to uncheck all the other categories. I confirmed this with an Apple Genius over the weekend.

How could they have made a change like this? Has me considering installing iOS 5 on my new iPhone.

I have a similar problem on my iphone 4s syncing with msoffice contacts. The groups were fine when I first synced. All contacts were in contacts but the grous contained the subset for my various business requirements. Yes I have over 1000 too. Then I decide dto use icloud for my backup. Big mistake. Now all my contacts are in contacts, the group names are there but there is no content. It doesn't work for me to untick not that I would want to each time with over 20 groups. I have tried to unravel and have disconnected from icloud but am stuck with the problem.

I seem to be having a slightly different problem as I am not even seeing the groups from my other devices. I also upgraded to iOS 6 on my iPad and, while I do have to check and uncheck the groups to be displayed, all of the groups are still there and the contacts are sorted accordingly.

For the iPhone 5, none of my groups are there and only options are, e.g., Exchange Contacts, Yahoo Contacts, Facebook Contacts, etc.

This may partially be related to having two separate iCloud accounts, one is a legacy @me.com account (that I had paid for) and the other is a an @icloud.com that was set up with my apple ID. I generally use e @me account for all of my contacts but I am having some conflict with this account and Exchange mail push so I have to turn that off.

I really wish they'd get all of this sorted out as it is making a mess of my mail, contacts and calendars.
