Why iTunes locks up for no reason

When i open iTunes for the first time of the day, within five minutes it locks up and I can't take any other action. I do not have any devices hooked up. I am not trying to change any settngs. In this case a song was playing, I attempted to right click another song to update the artist name and I couldn't do it although that file is still highlighted but frozen. when the song finished playing I could take no other actions. In my task manager it does not show that iTunes is not responding. When I end iTunes in Task Manager then I get a pop up showing "This program is not responding"

I'm on the latest version of iTunes 10.7 Windows 64 bit

Windows 7 Home Premium

Windows Update just completed yesterday

How can I figure out what is occurring? Is there a log or something?

More information:

I followed some the steps outlined under Troubleshooting. The step to check whether the issue is with plugins is to open in Safe Mode which I did and I don't have the lockup freezing issue. However, I don't have any plugins installed or located in those folders. Any ideas what could be happening outside of Safe Mode?
