Backing up a clone onto an iPod with Firewire and booting from it...

Hello,
In an earlier thread I was inquiring as to how I would go about making a clone of my computer to backup my files. I unserstand that the best thing to do is use an external firewire hard drive, however, an earlier poster told me that you could do it with the older iPods that support firewire.

I'm new to Macs so I'm kind of clueless as to what I should do when Backing-up my stuff/cloning it. And I'm even more clueless as to how I would boot from my iPod...

If you have a Firewire iPod, then read the User Guide info on switching the iPod into Disk Mode or read the following:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93651.

The easiest way to clone is to use the Restore option of Disk Utility (Utilities folder:)

1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the startup volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
4. Drag the startup volume to the Source entry field.
5. Select the backup volume (on connected iPod) from the leftside list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Check the box to Erase Destination.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.

After the clone is completed (it will take some time) you can test it by opening the Startup Disk preference pane, selecting the iPod volume from the icon list, then click on the Restart button. If all is right your computer should startup from the iPod. To return to your regular volume open Startup Disk again, select your normal startup volume, then click on the Restart button.

Hi Grady,

IMO, this is not a good backup solution but here's how if you want to try.

SuperDuper can do it easily. Read the instructions. Basically, you just choose your hard drive as the source and your iPod as the destination.

Be sure you have enough space so that your iPod and that is not more than about 80% full at any time.

To boot from your iPod, after making the clone just choose your connected iPod in System Preferences >> Startup Disk and restart.
