Ipod Touch upgrade from iOS 4 to iOS 6 issue

My son attempted to update the iOS on his iPod touch (4th generation) when prompted by iTunes. He clicked yes and then itunes performed a back-up and then we believe started to update but had a problem as when we returned an error message stated there were issues. His current version is iOS 4 and was attempting to update to iOS6 . We have not plugged into a PC or iTunes in a year or so.

Now, the iPod is displaying the usb to itunes picture and when we attempt to plug the device into the pc, both itunes and the pc do not recognize the device. We did the special restart on the ipod holding down both buttons but nothing is working.

We have a call into tech support but they are closed until Monday.

Anyone familar with this issue or know how to resolve?

thanks guys.

You might have to have iOs 5 before 6. I'm not sure if it gives you an option. You might try updating iTunes. I recently got the iOs 6 and i think I need to finish updating ITunes for it. My IPod already had iOs 5 installed. Maybe his is an older one. Try going to settings, then general, then to software update. I hope this could help!

I am unable to check as both devices are stuck on the "Connect to Itunes" screen. Again, when I attempt to connect to the PC and itunes, both will not recognize the devices.

I have tried every to reset the devices (i.e. holding down the home and power buttons) to receive a restore prompt when connecting to the usb.

So I placed both devices in DFU mode while connected to my PC. I saw a glimmer of hope when the apple mobile device drivers re-installed but itunes and my PC still would not recognize the devices.

As a last Hail Mary, I shut down the computer, removed all usb connections (i.e. wireless keyboard and mouse), and then restarted the computer with the iPhone plugged in. And then finally, after restarting, the PC and itunes both recognized my iPhone and prompted me to restore. After that, the resore went smooth and was succesfully updated to iOS6 on both devices.

So in summary, the DFU, the shut down and restart with the device connected, and the removal of all other USB connections (i have four usb ports) seemed to do the trick. Thanks for your help.
