My iPhone 5 speaker does not work properly.

I had the issue only when playing with any videos or games, it still works for phone call and alarm though. The speakphone works before, it just stopped working a few days back. Here is what I did to solve my issue:

1) double tap the home button, it bring up the active app apps small window,

2) swipe left until to the window of speaker volum phone, my volume was set to zero somehow, change it back to and it works.

My iPhone 5 speaker stopped working this last weekend while I was talking on the speakerphone. I did a full recovery using iTunes, I've toggled just about every setting that is audio related, and I live nowhere near an Apple store. Sometimes it sounds like it cuts back in, but it always stops after about 5 seconds and won't work for a long time. I think this is a hardware issue. Has ANYONE found an Apple-approved fix that works?

I have a 32G black iPhone 5, not jailbroken, running newest update of iOS6, and on VZW. As of tonight, and for no obvious reason, my external speaker "crackles" and upon going into my Sounds settings, my phone would completely crash if I tried to adjust any settings. After this happened 4 times, I was able to go in and adjust settings, but after pressing on one or two tones, I could no longer hear any tones that I would select, factory or ones I have downloaded. Just finished a factory restore, crackling is still there. It almost has a feedback-like sound to it, I hear it at the beginning and after of any tone or noise the phone makes. Boo. My phone is only a few months old! No problems with my internal speaker or microphone. Any insight, anyone?

Went to the Apple store today with the same external speaker issue. I was on a speaker phone call and the sound went caput...They actual changed the speaker module out of my i phone 5. There are several issues in regard to the speaker not working. According to the Genius it can be a software issue or a hardware issue. He did assure me that the new speaker module they are using had good results so we will see. If your external speakers go down just bring the phone in to Apple and don't waste your time with all these different fix theories. Hope this helps

I'm facing the same problem and I have an appointment with and Apple rep to resolve this issue. I tried everything I could, but what happened when you went to you appointment? Did they resolve your issue or did they give you a new iPhone?

I have an iphone 5 and I recently noticed my speaker volume fluctuating a lot! Earlier it wasn't that noticeable but now it's become bad. Is it a software or a hardware problem ? What can I do to get rid of it! It has become really annoying now! Help!

Have my iPhone5 for almost a year, speaker started having problem lately. External speaker works though. Apple store changed the hardware, works fine for a month and the problem is back. Went back to store and they couldn't tell me what is causing the problem. Not sure what they did this time but I certainly do not hope to go back to the store a third time for the same problem.

My iPhone 5 is doing this straight out of the box:( It's definitely not dirt. If anyone has any ideas...please post!

I have an IPhone 4S. Right after using the square my speaker no longer worked. Could not hear the phone ringing nor the other party answering. Took the phone to AT&T to see my options. They were stumped and said I needed a new phone. No upgrades in the near future and out of warranty. Decided to go home and try restoring phone to factory settings. Took one more look on Internet and and found where someone turned Bluetooth on and theirs worked. In my case, Bluetooth was on and I turned it off. The speaker now works. Phone fixed! So thankful for these threads.

SOLUTION: Turn off Bluetooth.

I prefer to listen to Voicemail messages on my iPhone 5's speaker. After a restore the speaker wouldn't work. karenlbonnet posted this solution, and that fixed the problem.

1. Go to...Settings->General->Accessibility->AssistiveTouch

2. Turn ON AssistiveTouch - an icon will appear on the screen

3. Touch the icon

4. Touch Device

5. Touch Unmute

6. Touch your way out of AssisitveTouch

7. Turn OFF AssistiveTouch - optional

8. Enjoy the Sounds

I did the following:

1) Went to https://getsupport.apple.com/GetproductgroupList.action and ran the online diagnostics.

2) Scheduled an appointment at the Apple Store using the link following the dignostics results.

3) They changed the speaker module within 30 minutes while I was at the store.

4) Received my working phone back without further problems.

The price for the repair by apple at $59 was waived since my iphone 5 was still under warranty.

Other than having the speaker fail in the first place, the resulting repair was quick and painless. :-)

Plugged ear pods in played music pulled them out and speaker works again
