Q: Permissions Repair after 10.7.5

I never had any problems with my permissions before I updated to 10.7.5 but now I have something that will just not get repaired, is anybody else experiencing the same. It's reoccuring everytime, so Disk Utility isn't repairing it despite what it says.

I haven't experienced any issues with the monitors, but did notice how the update created an invisible folder in the Preference Panes folder called .Displays and created an alias for Display.PrefPane and moved the original to the .Displays/V1 folders.

Is this just another glitch that has happened before with Disk Utility in previous versions of OS X?

    Thanks Neil,

     

    You answered a question I asked on an earlier post regarding ML.  I was hesitant to upgrade as I understood it was good practice to check/repair permissions before a major upgrade.  If going from 10.7.5 to ML resolved the permissions issue for you, sounds like I can go ahead and do the same.  I appreciate the update!

    My machine is too old to go to ML, so I have to wait for a fix.  After a week the permission problem discribed in this thread craters my MacBook forcing a hard shutdown and restart.  Quite a pain!  Anxious to hear what Apple says or does.

    I'm glad my post was useful.

     

    As you say, its good practice to check the disk and permissions prior to an upgrade, I was unable to do - but the upgrade worked fine.  I did notice that a week later, Disk Utility did detect some corruption on the local disk regarding the OS X 10.7.5 update that I have previously deleted.  I resolved the issues within the Repair Console.  Its been fine since.  I quite like what they've done with ML.  I fear that the next OS X will require a new MacBook...

     

    I assume that if 10.7.6 is being developed, they will include something that will resolve the issues that are documented within this thread as well as the other issues with 10.7.5.  At the moment, I've not heard anything from Apple regarding my Bug Report, so I must conclude that it is this new update.

    Still having the same problem here and it's making the poor machine run like a snail, especially if the internet or Adobe pdf are running.

    OWSI35990 -- You are the only one I've seen who has reported the same problem that I have been having. I use an external monitor with a MB Pro. Since the upgrade, I have to force shutdown almost every time I restart the computer. If I repair permissions, I can restart the computer with no problem. Within a short period of time, however, I'm back to having to force shutdown every time. Is that pattern similar to your experience? Have you found any work arounds or solutions?

    I have the same problem on both a MB Pro w/external monitor and a Mac Pro.  The symptoms are similar - Repair Permissions doesn't really repair anything, but the results are different.  My wife uses the MBP and it periodically freezes her computer after a few sleep/wake cycles.  Her work around is to just shut down every night in stead of sleeping.  It's a pain because of the external monitor (a Dell), but so far it hasn't locked up since she began that routine.  On my Mac Pro the symptom is loss of Bluetooth (a magic mouse) that forces shut down.  I found a thread that suggested turning off all BT gear, letting the machine completely restart, then turning the BT items on so that it can re-pair.  That works although for the life of me I can't figure out why it would and it certainly shouldn't be that way. Hope this helps.

    I hope that Apple will release an update in order to resolve these problems. Almost two months from the release of 10.7.5 and still no news...

    Does anyone know if this has been fixed? I've been having the same problem now with--alittle more extensive history. Adding memory helped (I'm at 8 now), but they've replaced my hard drive twice too...

     

    But this is still a problem...now I can't connect my iphone via wifi to itunes on this macbook. ipad connects fine.

     

    when I run a permissions fix, do I need to shut all programs down? Sorry if that's a basic question but I thought I didn't have to (I've asked).

    My 2006 Mac Pro has been giving me the same problems described by owsi35990 and others here: intermittent failure to "wake up", forcing me to shut down and restart using the O/I switch. It's a pain, as I run backups to external drives in the nighttime, so I don't want to have to shut down each night.

     

    BTW I found this thread by Googling,  Permissions differ on “System/Library/PreferencePanes/.Displays/V1/Displays.prefPane/Contents/Resourc es"  thinking it might be my ACD that was causing the problem.

     

    So I too await an update from Apple that will fix this, as my machine too will not run Mountain Lion
