this one did not worked?
sorry, good luck, i am sure you will finish to find something.
This solution works with all OSX versions.
Before shutting down or restarting the mac, Set the Speakers on MUTE by either using the keyboard or Menubar,
No more startup Sound ...
Hope this helps.

No, this solution does not work with all versions of OS X. For example 10.8.3 running on a Macbook Air.

Why do people keep posting this?
Hey y'all,
That sound is ridiculous (why can't it just be a pleasant chime?). I have the same MBP from c. 2008 running MtnLion 10.8.3 similar to sandm101. The mute-while-booting doesn't work for me. I also tried 3rd party software "startupsound.prefpane" and it doesn't work either. Yes, I've read the bit about the importance of the startup sounds, but it's not Steve Jobs' machine, it's mine. I paid for it (too much if you ask me). Anyway, I've started using an app called AutoMute (https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35207/auto-mute). I am not affiliated, and so load at own risk. But it works great...automatically mutes startup sound on boot, once you are running you hit a button to unmute for regular sound. Super convenient.
If it turns out my credit card information gets stolen by Eastern Europeans in the next couple of days, I'll let you know it wasn't safe 🙂

Love this one...
Shouldn't be user choice, after all?
Again, why not put a startup sound everywhere, car, fridge, iphone, ipad, pc's, yourself? Just in case?!
Thanks for your post Papriqua ;-)

Because it works?
works, maybe...
a solution? not really...
i do not want to have to think to perform this manipulation EACH time...
and if the sound is SO important, why on earth Apple tech decided that the
sound will not "work" when doing this...? a bit paradoxal... as I explained in my previous
post.
(by the way the "ninja..." soft worked like a charm, and no more sound now, whatever i think to mute it or not before for whatever reason... ;-)

You asked why post it, that's why. I couldn't care less about speculation as to why ninja does not work.

But it doesn't work across the board and on the newer versions of the OS.

Seems you might be tired. Have a good night.
For me it does
You didn't post it, you replied to my post.
