If I understand your question correctly, you're now missing all of your ratings and play counts, right? If that's your problem, I've solved this in the past by getting your iTunes data from your music folder and grabbing all of the files (not just the music, but every file in your old "My Music" folder, and then copying that to your new computer BEFORE you install iTunes on the new computer. Once that's done, then install iTunes and point it at your new "My Music" folder, and it should retrieve all of your play counts, playlists, ratings, etc.

Good luck.

Thanks for the reply.

So I need to take my itunes off my laptop and start again as I got all my songs onto my laptop by authorizing home share from my PC will I need to turn home share off then delete itunes then carry out the task as you have suggested.

Will I then need to turn home share back on again to get all my songs onto the new itunes or will the task you are suggesting do this for me?

Hi again - I'm totally no expert, and I haven't really done this from a "home sharing" standpoint. I've only done it when I've gotten a new computer and wanted to transfer my iTunes library over to the new computer from the old one.

If you *copy* everything from one machine over to the other one, you'll basically be creating an exact copy of your library that will include your playlists, ratings, play counts, etc.

However, if you're intending to actually still *use* both computers simultaneously, then I think all you need to do is make sure both computers are on the same network and then turn on home sharing and "share my library" functions, and then you should be able to play songs that are housed on your main computer on the other one without the need to actually transfer them over.

Again, it's possible that I'm not understanding what your goal is here - I originally answered your question from the standpoint of needing to replace your entire library into a new machine, not share it between machines.

These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.

Method 1

  1. Backup the library with this User Tip.
  2. Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
  3. Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
  4. Keep your backup up-to-date in future.

Method 2

Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.

Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.

I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.

If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.

If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable.

Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.
