iPhone5 issues with WPA2/AES Wifi

Confirmed that my iPhone 5 is having the Wi-Fi problem.

MAC Adress: 54:26:96:0E:A9:25 (Apple)

Router: Dlink DSL-2730B

Firmware: AU_1.00

Wi-Fi works for 1 page load on WPA/WPA2 when AES is used. If the router is switched to AES+TKIP everything works fine so its definately a problem with AES Security. Again as posted in a previous reply thats all well and good for your home setup but 9/10 every other wi-fi network runs WPA2/AES meaning you can't use it unless u have access to change the secuirty option 😟

I read all the thread here because I also had the same problem this week during my business trip. Each hotel I went to, I had trouble with iPhone 5 WIFI but no issues with my iPad 2 running iOS5. Of course, I had no way to know if the hotels routers were running WPA2 wit AES but I supposed that Hotels like Hyatt, Meridien and Hilton must have. I presume that just like me, you backup up your iPhone 4 before upgrading to iphone5 and that you restored your iPhone 4 settings in your iPhone 5. I am not sure if this is correct or not but it is maybe not a good idea to restore networks settings that were good 2 years ago. This was my hunch. So I try resetting things and firstly, I tried Network Settings Reset. And it worked...EVERYTHING WENT BACK TO NORMAL.

So the SOLUTION to ALL your network connectivity problems with wifi on iPhone 5 is: go to SETTINGS--> GENERAL--> RESET--> RESET NETWORK SETTINGS

VOILA!

stop returning your iPhone 5 :-) it is working properly.

Not to discredit you in any way but your fix to ALL wifi problems does not work. Someone else posted this solution, it may work for some but it did not work for me. I tried that as well as setting up the phone as new, neither worked on a wpa2 secured network. I even made the genius at the apple store try it in the store, he reset the network settings, he restored the phone, and he set the phone up as new and it was never able to connect to the apple store's secured network. You know what DID work? Getting a NEW phone! So to all you people with issues out there I would demand a replacement and make the apple store test the wifi in store before you take it home.

After three hours of trying to resolve the same isse, including a useless call to Apple support, I figured out that it was an issue with my SSID. Specifically, I selected the - copy my 2.4Ghz settings for my 5.6. I guess IOS 6 can't deal with two SSID's of the same name. Using two different SSID names immediately solved the problem, and I can connect to either one with success.

Does anyone know if having two different SSID's names for the 2.4 and 5.6 affects the "8211ac" benefit?

I had the exact same issue, but on my home network. It was not the iPhone5 specifically, but instead I had two SSID's with the same name. In my case I had a 2.4Ghz router radio and a 5Ghz router radio with the same name. IOS6 devices could not connect, but all non-IOS6 devices did, including my Galaxy S3.

Check with youR IT and make sure each wireless router has a unique SSID until Apple fixes this.

I tried that same technique on my 3rd iPhone with Apple Technical Support and it did not resolve the issue. On my 4th iPhone i did not do a restore and just resync'd with iCLoud. Much better results.

I also noted that many of the iphone cases WILL cause the wifi to drop connections (went through 3 of them on the 4th phone). Seems that the high density of the material around the antennas will interfere with the wifi reception. Took off the last case and the phone had much better results. Neary zero drops and a stronger signal. Tested for a full week and had a strong signa with zero drops. Put each case back on and the issues with wifi reappeared! A case with thin plastic worked. The rubberized ones did not. Any one else that can confirm this?

I had the exact same thing after I updated to iOS 6.0.1. I went into the settings in my Airport Extreme and found encryption was set to WPA/WPA2. I changed it to straight WPA2 and now my speed tests are back to normal. After the update it was around .45 Mbps (this is not a typo there is a dot in front of 45). After changing encryption settings it is averaging 11 Mbps. I hope this helps.

Upgraded to iOS 6.0.1 and still experiencing the same issue : packet loss when using WPA2 AES even if the phone is on top of the WiFi Router. Iphone 4S next to this Iphone 5 doesn't drop any packets when using AES Cypher.

Downgrading to WPA / TKIP fixes this, seems to be a software issue with the way the iphone 5 handles AES encryption.

My mac address starts with 88:53:95 (Apple) and I'm using an Asus AC66U with latest .260 firmware.

"WifI issues" is not specific enough. You could simply be experiencing WiFi interference.

This forum is for people who's iPhone 5 will not opperate on WPA2/AES encrypted networks. The typical symptom is that the phone works great for about a minutes and then data rates drop down to unusable rates. The phone works fine on WPA, WEP or Open networks. The 6.0.1 update fixes this specific problem.

I'm having a bit of trouble accepting that this is a hardware issue. I have a 4S, and so does my partner. They both connected fine to WPA2 encrypted networks until we both upgraded to iOS 6, and now when we can get a connection it's painfully slow, and lasts only seconds before dropping. Loading a web page (when it does work) is slower than 56k dialup!!

I changed my router settings to TKIP and now it has a fast stable connection again.

If this is a hardware problem, how come it affects both of our 4S units, and ONLY since the iOS 6 rollout?

IOS 6.0.2 fixed the problem for me. I have a Linksys WRT54GL router running firmware v4.30.15. I have the router set to WPA2-Personal. My iPhone 5 has never been able to connect to the router successfully, yet my iPhone 4 always worked. IOS 6.0.2 now allows me to connect and utilitize WiFi just fine. I've only tried it for a few minutes, but so far, so good.

My only problem with the WIFI and AES encryption was due to a dual-band router (2.4 & 5 GHz) with the same SSID name for both bands. Once I renamed each band with a unique SSID (like "home" and "home_5G" repectively) the problem went away immediately.

Once you do that, don't forget to reset your network setting under Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings

I have experienced the issue that all my devices connect fine but when transferring data, the transmission would just freeze for several seconds before continuing. This only happened when selecting WAP2 Personal as my network setting in my wireless router settings. Very annoying! I found a "fix" that worked for me:

I have the following at home:

iphones 5 (AT&T), 5S (AT&T) and 5S (Verizon), iPad 4 (AT&T)

Linksys E4200 wifi router

Last year, after I upgraded the iphone 5 and ipad 4 to iOS 6, there were no problems. The issues started when I upgraded my router from a regular one channel 2.4GHz router to a dual channel 2.4/5GHz router. As somebody pointed out correctly above, the issues shows when both SSIDs for both, the 2.4 and 5GHz networks are the same. I changed the name to network2 and network5, different names for both networks. Now, I can connect with all my iOS devices to the 5GHz network without any problems, even with WAP2 Personal setting. However, when connecting to the 2.4GHz network, the issue still remains. It seems to be a 2.4GHz WAP2 Personal AES issue only. When connecting to the 5GHz, there are no issues. Also, I think it has to do with the manufacturer of the wifi router in combination with the iphone. I can connect to a 2.4GHz network at a friend's place who has WAP2 Personal AES as settings without any problems.

Here's one interesting thing... the Verizon 5S never had any issues - even when connecting to the 2.4GHz network with WAP2 Personal AES.

Sorry mate, but this would not resolve the issue. The issue is explicitly with WPA2 - AES and the Apple device holding on to a connection.

When I was troubleshooting this, I did try static public DNS - but to no avail. The issue is that the apple device (STILL - this thread is a year old) has issues with WPA2 on AES. Change to WAP1 or WPA2 with TKIP and it works fine .
