Q: iPhone5 issues with WPA2/AES Wifi

I am using a Dual- Band Linksys E2500 router with WPA2 Personal (WPA2/AES) enabled. None of my other apple products (iPhone4S, iPhone4, iPad2 and the New iPad) have had problems connecting to my router. But everything changed when I got my iPhone5.

Basically the iPhone5 is capable to connect to the WPA2-Personal wifi network but after 1-2min starts to drop network packages, hence, I cannot browse any page (not even the router page 192.168.1.1) even though I still have a valid IP and the wifi icon is shown on my top screen.

I pinged the phone from my router diagnostics page and while I can browse the web with the iPhone5, I can see no packages lost. However after 1-2min the iPhone5 cannot open any websites while still connected to the wifi, it starts to show network packages lost.

A workaround that I found was to create a "Guest" network (which is not WPA2-Personal) or even WEP. There are no issues when connecting to these alternate networks.

Can anyone out there confirm this issue?? Is it software or hardware related?? It seems to me there are issues with WPA2-Personal (WPA2/AES)

Thanks in advance,

C

Other than the fact that there are probably no intel modules

I think we are looking here to a BIG bad batch of phones... simple as that. I mean, why to wait for an update when have people reporting sucesful results with a new replacement (including myself)?

Well I'm holding out for a software fix as mine isnt as bad of a problem as others. Ive seen a few on macrumors where a replacment didn't do anything to help them. I don't want to end up where I can't connect to anything WPA2/AES like some people. At least a reboot fixes me.

On the other thread someone mentioned a theory about homesharing. I realized thats another setting I changed after restoring the other day (where I thought restoring triggered my problem) I asked and am waiting for him to answer, but I turned it off and will be headed home at lunch to see it makes a diff on my end.

@theswerm, make sure you describe the problem plainly and simply, emphasizing "AES Encryption", and don't let them test it on an open network, say it's OK then send you home. That's been the MO. The have shelves full of Airport routers to set up a secured WAP if they don't already have one..

After ronaldo's experience I was hoping to wake up & be reading about smooth exchanges. But it looks like nothing's changed on a large scale.

if someone gets hold of a tech who knows about the AES specfic bulletin, maybe it has a reference number or something we can publish here. I'll ask about it when my replacement comes in as well.

Apple Support - ask for Greg (engineer) so you may be escalated 2x to get to him. Reference case #

    356928723.

He KNOWS there are issues and mentioned 2 internal docs on WAP2/AES specifically.

Hi Eric, I have to say my experience was okay but nothing was perfect. I was hoping this morning to have a tracking number for the shipments of my two iphones and have nothing. I called the engineering I was dealing with (Tracy Rice) and left a message. So, although they addimitted the internal documents nothing happened as far as I can tell. I was promised to have my iphones tomorrow. I'll let you know if I get updates.

Thanks, this is at least something we can ask them to look up. One more thing for folks to arm themselves with when they first contact Apple.

I hate adding one more thing for people to hunt down, but turning off homesharing made it so I didnt have to reboot my phone when I got home to get it to connect to wireless. I am still not convinced I have the same exact problem most of you are having, but so far this has helped me.

I will definitely be clear as to what the issue is. I am not leaving without a new phone ordered. I am actually a Network Admin and was able to test this thing out on four different routers. Three at work and 1 at home. When I connect to the WPA2/AES network, I can maybe get three web pages open, then it stops and spins. I can connect to the WPA/PSK network and it runs very well. All routers using WPA2/AES connect and then stop working as with a lot of users. I am going to be hopeful that they will be receptive, but I will not get my hopes up. Also, thank you for the reference #.

When I talked to AppleCare on Sept 27, they said they would overnight me a new phone. Three days later I called and was told the shipment was processing and the phone would arrive Oct 10-12. So, don't believe them when they say they'll ship a replacement overnight.

On top of that, just as I started receiving UPS notifications, they showed the flight was canceled "due to circumstances beyond UPS control." I have seen any tracking activity after that.

I'm having similar issues with my iPad 3 Wifi Address starting with 74:E1:B6, which I believe is an Apple manufactured one.  I can connect no problem at work to our guest Wifi on WPA2 PSK, but cannot connect at home on my WPA2-AES setup (although that is Apple recommended.)  I can access a few websites, but most say unable to contact server.  Same goes for most of the aps.  On the flip side my IOS5 devices, Android device and laptop all work fine.

I'm on my way into the Apple Store this PM to see how they will rectify.  But one thing is clear, I'm not just changing my Wifi security to get it to work, The device should be made to work on all the standards.

Just got a replacement after experiencing the same issues.  I can confirm that the rep was not aware of the issue and that they did not let me choose between Apple and Intel wifi chips (Russian Roulette, he said).  I will report back once phone is set up and tested (I did get another Apple wifi chip so hoping I didnt lose in the Roulette tournament).

I really hope so. It really ***** because it runs well on the WiFi with the AES. I finally went with the iPhone after having the Evo for awhile and other androids. Right out of the gate to have this experience just blows. Best of luck to you!

The same happened to me, I have to say thanks to the technician of the Rome Apple Store who listened me and look the problems met. At the end agreed for a replacement, but before him the other who talked with me didn't want to replace the phone.

Unfortunately, I didn't record the MAC address of the iPhone 5 I had originally with this issue before I had it exchanged for one that doesn't have the issue. Though I can tell you the working iPhone 5 I have now is an Apple MAC address.
