Unexplained constant data usage on iPhone 5

My wife and I just received iPhone 5's yesterday, our first smartphones. We're enjoying them but then last night I noticed something strange. Whenever the phone is on cellular data there is a constant data usage taking place. When I go into settings and look at usage of cellular data I can see it increase by a couple of KB each time I recheck it. Going back and then back in takes only about a second. So very rough calculations indicates that this adds up to about 170 MB per day when on cellular! I've even turned off everything I can think of to try and address background data usage: push notifications, location services, all iCloud services, etc. it still uses it.

Is this normal? I did some searching here and saw posts on folks having mysterious data transfers post midnight. But this is something that's happening constantly. ANy ideas?

On the Verizon Wireless website, log in to My Verizon and you'll see your device listed. The middle section is My Usage, and at the bottom of that is usage details. Click on that and the next page will show voice, text and data. Scroll down to data and click view data details and it will show the amount of data used at specific times.

This specific detail is only available on the website. Not the mobile app.

Amy,

I have three entirely different numbers:

The Verizon summary (which they base the "overages" on is giving me a number of 4.1 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

The Verizon detail (which you can download to a spreadsheet and summarize) shows a total of 1.5 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

The cellular usage read off the phone itself (under Settings/General/Usage/Cellular Usage) shows a total of 6.9 GB used since Friday when I got the phone.

So I have no idea what the real number is at all!! My gut feeling is none of them, because one of the specific data chunks shown in the Verizon detail is from 11:11am on 9/25 (I was in a meeting in downtown Chicago with the phone in my pocket and no apps open, and everything had been synced on WiFi the night before) of 629 MB. I have no idea what could cause that to happen. I had two other strange large chunks that same day for 111 MB and 262 MB which I cant explain.

The good new is that the 262 MB chunck (7:30pm on the 25th) was the last rogue data that hit my phone. But it doesn't explain why my detail adds up to 1.5 GB but I've run into the overage according to Verizon (they've charged me another $10 for going past 4 GB, however my reporting and escalation with them resulted in a 3 GB credit they've given me while this sorts itself out).

Well here's something I find odd. When I disable LTE I get two data tallies on the phone. Cellular data and tether data. The second I re-enable LTE, the tether data total is rolled up into the cellular data. I have not set up hotspot and have no devices tethering to me. And my numbers keep exploding. Husband has same phone but his numbers just creep compared to mine.

Hey Amy, here are my numbers. The Verizon Data summary showed me at 1015 MB this morning. When manually tallied up through the details section up through the same time period, my usage is 842 MB.

I've been reseting the tracker on the phone daily to get a feel for each day's usage since we're new to smartphones. For yesterday's 24 hour period my phone showed that I had used 147 MB. When tallied through data details, Verizon had me down for only 88 MB. So, definitely some discrepancies in the numbers.

Got my iPhone 5 last night at 6 PM EST - new Verizon customer, just switched from AT&T..

At 2 PM this afternoon I received a text message saying I had used 53% of my 1 GB limit. Verizon reps said that at 5:50 AM my phone went through 400 MB of data while I was asleep.

After talking with both Apple & Verizon I reset the cellular usage data counter - within an hour it appears my phone received 100 MB while sitting in my living room with Wi-Fi on the phone. Wait just checked again ... within 10 minutes it's up to 217MB,

Lazykins - I knew they had to remove the usage per app feature, but did not realize they had removed the whole app. When pro was first available it did not track per app, that was added in an update later, hence my misunderstanding. You are right, the pro version is no longer available. I'm so paranoid about losing mine, that I've copied the ipa to another folder.
