Iphone 4s iOs 6 Sound issue-

Hi. I've seen several topics regarding this issue yesterday, but since then apple has done maintenance and those posts are nowhere to be seen 😐

I downloaded iOs 6 the day it came out, and had no real issues with my device, but a couple of days after sound problems started. The only sound that comes out my device is 'ringtone' when someone calls me. Occassionally the lock screen sound/keyboard sounds will come back on for a couple of seconds but not much longer. I though maybe I dropped my device or got it wet, but that is not the case.

The 3.5mm jack I use for audio in my car, still provides working sound from my iphone, but the speaker on the phone itself does not. My radio/dock for the phone also plays the music/sounds from the device, and will continue playing them even after removing the phone, but only for a couple of seconds.

So all-in-all I don't think its a hardware issue. My question is, anyone here having a related bug? Any known fixes?

Just got off the phone with Apple Phone Support. Of course they do not acknowledge this as a hardware defect ("I have been taking hundreds of calls since iOS 6 was released and this is first I have heard of this issue"). Working in software support myself, I just asked my issue be logged so that eventually when enough people report the issue they'll realize this is a problem with the software. The support rep suggested I do a restore but I really don't feel like that should be necessary since the problem is intermittent.

I would suggest anyone who experiences this same problem report it to Apple, that's the only way to get traction and hopefully get a fix.

After updating to iOS6, I lost all sound for apps like YouTube, Netflix, games, and even notifications. The only time sound worked was during a phone call or when the head set was plugged in.

I did a full back up and restore- sound restored but only for a day before the problem returned.

Called Apple Support and was advised to do another restore, but this time restore it as NEW first, then do the restore from back up.

Seemed to do the trick.

Here are the instructions of what I was given- hopefully this will help you too:

Here is a link about backing up your iPhone with iTunes.

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766?viewlocale=en_US

Once you back up your device you will want to restore it.

You will need to have iTunes open on your computer screen.

Please turn your iPhone off.

Press and hold the Home Button.

Continue to hold the Home Button as you plug you iPhone in to the usb cable.

You will want to continue to hold the Home button until you get a screen with the message "device found in recovery mode".

Please follow the prompts and restore device as NEW.

once the restore is done you will have to set up the device and test the sound.

If it works you will then need to restore the device from the back up to restore your user settings.

You can find the instructions how to restore from back up also from the the link I provided.

I'm convinced now after many days of this going on and off it's a software related issue. the Lock and keyboard and clicks, ringer alerts, sounds stop working. Basically anything that comes out of the 'loud speaker'

Been having the problem reoccur intermittently since iOS6. It is a brand new iPhone 4 (not a iPhone 4s) so unsure if it was doing it on older software.

Another way I temporarily fixed this is in Settings-> Sounds -> Ringer and Alerts, move the slider. Mine was at 50% and moved it to 60% and sounds start working again. Doesn't matter from where and to where, just move it (except for 0% obviously). Note this action does not always fix it. Sometimes I can be moving it and the ringer sample plays for half a second and then cuts out to no sound again. Sometimes just have to move it heaps of times (10’s) to get it working again. Very odd and unreliable especially for alarm clock alerts.

LOCK and Keyboard clicks are ON and have not changed those setting ever.

MUTE button is OFF and not being changed.

Volume is always up.

I expect it to work now for a day to two and the problem will then re-appear. Next time it happens, I'll try the 'Settings-> General-> Reset -> Reset all Settings' to see if this fix's it immediately or not.

I have called Apple care about this same issue I'm on my second iPhone 4S and they keep insisting on giving me a "new/refurbished" iPhone 4S, a VZW tech told me the iPhone 4S because of Siri doesn't have the sensor like all other iPhone models I've been experiencing this well before ios 6, have tried everyone's ideas, thank you, but apparently it's just the phone. I find it hard to believe that will all the technology Apple has they couldn't rectify this. So, I basically now I have an ipod Touch, unless I use speaker or headsets, which should not be the only way to use any phone. Any suggestions, ideas or advice would be greatly appreciated. I really don't want to have to buy a new iPhone, going back and forth with Apple care is a struggle I have to supply them with receipts of my new replacement phone as well as my old one so that they can transfer the apple care.

I have these kinds of problems too!!!!!

After I updated to iOS 6, my lock-screen sound, typing sounds, musice and game are no longer working.

But some time later, they will come back.

I either think it is a hardware issue!

Every problem comes along with iOS 6!!!!!!!!

Come on, Apple, fix it!!!!!!!

I cannot bear these any longer!!!!!!

I too am having a major issue with my sound ever since I updated to iOS6. I do not get sound when I get a text, voicemail, or email. Basically all my alert sounds dont play. I cannot hear sound when I play a video or song and all of my clicking sounds (ie. typing, swiping) are completely lost. I can however hear it when I have earbuds on which is very strange. I tried to reset all the setting hoping that maybe that will fix it, but to no avail. Sometimes if I am texting and I get an incoming text it will play the text alert sound for a split second but go back to no sound. Also, my volume buttons do not work either...like one persone said above, the side buttons display the volume logo but no volume bar or change to volume when pressing the buttons up or down. This is very frustrating. Obviously this is not a coincidence that so many people are having this issue AFTER iOS6 was installed. I have never had issues with my iphone as its been the best phone ive ever owned. I can no longer say my phone is error free and frustration free. 😟

I've had the same problem since before ios 6, once my 2nd iPhone 4s in 2 months....there, is in fact, a sensor to dim the screen, apple tech said 1st solution take off the plastic clear screen cover if one was put on upon purchase, that's where the sensor is and mine was just 25% covered so I took it off, still mute on my ear, still ends call when power on/off is pushed during call. He informed me to do a restore, which we did both to factory settings and back up from restore. Also, antenna is on bottom left if phone is facing you which is why coverage may be weak. He said the case really doesn't matter but for testing purposes to take it off, we tested on wi-fi and 3G and I did in fact have less coverage. I'm a bit annoyed b/c tomorrow when I go to the Apple store again and if they can't fix it, I'm going to get my 3rd refurbished iPhone 4S, I've only had one new phone the iPhone 4 but the hardware died, so I'm stuck in the endless refurbished iPhone 4S loop. I hope this helps.....
