Q: Iphone 4s iOs 6 Sound issue-

Hi. I've seen several topics regarding this issue yesterday, but since then apple has done maintenance and those posts are nowhere to be seen

I downloaded iOs 6 the day it came out, and had no real issues with my device, but a couple of days after sound problems started. The only sound that comes out my device is 'ringtone' when someone calls me. Occassionally the lock screen sound/keyboard sounds will come back on for a couple of seconds but not much longer. I though maybe I dropped my device or got it wet, but that is not the case.

The 3.5mm jack I use for audio in my car, still provides working sound from my iphone, but the speaker on the phone itself does not. My radio/dock for the phone also plays the music/sounds from the device, and will continue playing them even after removing the phone, but only for a couple of seconds.

So all-in-all I don't think its a hardware issue. My question is, anyone here having a related bug? Any known fixes?

Lofty, I think you cracked it.. No keyboard clicks, and no sound in games. Saw your post and checked.. Yep, privicy switch was in the on position. (6 year old daughter had been playing on phone for a car journey).

Flipped it off, and lo and behold, all sound was restored.

same problem, on an iphone 4  -- also occurred after upgrading to os6.

Tried EVERYTHING until I scrolled all through this thread to the end, and sure enough, that little button on the left hand side was up (with the red slowing).  I SWEAR i didn't do it.  Could it have somehow happened with the OS upgrade?  Anyway, moved it down and now all is working fine.  But it was a BIG hassle and lots of other futile (and useless ) efforts.

Well, ever since I posted that I cleaned the charger area out with a toothbrush and a tiny bit of alcohol, my phone has worked just fine. I'm going to go back to my old case because it covers the charging area up and doesn't let so much junk in. When I started having problems it had been about a month since I changed my case to a hard cover. It doesn't cover anything, but the back of the phone. I never had this issue with my Trident case. So, if you have checked all settings and the button on the side and you are STILL having issues. I would try this and get a case for your phone that covers the charging area.

I spoke with Apple tech just now (thank you for whoever said to use the Assistive Technology). They said they are working on a fix for this, but it'll take time. It is an OS issue and they are well aware of it.  Some phones may reset themselves magically and others might not, but it seems no resets, cleanings, etc. will really eliminate the issue permanently. There's a bug in the the updates somewhere.

Found the solution and fixed it! I've had exactly the same problem as you do and I found out that my iPhone thought that I was connected to a docking station. So I put it in a docking station, played some music and after that pulled it out, tried to continue playing the music with my iPhone speakers and it worked for a second, then it crashed and rebooted or something like that. And now it's working!!

Hope this also will work for you guys. Good luck from The Netherlands!

    Thank you for posting this.

You I would expect Apple to post some form of message here somewhere saying: he, sorry, we made an oopsie. We will fix this as soon as possible, but we are aware of this...

Saves a lot of cleaning, posting and resetting for all off us...

    Hello everybody !

I was on iOS 5.1.1 without any kind of problem. Yesterday I wanted to upgrade my system to iOS 6.1.

Now, during a call, I don't have any sound on the front hearphone ! The speacker at the bottom works, the jack connector works.

I tried to restore from a backup, to restore as a new phone and to restore in DFU mode.

At this time, nothing worked for me and I still have this problem.

i'm really surprise that is happening with an APPLE iPhone ! We are not on Android with x million of different hardware... It's really crazy and I think it's finish for me with Apple for the future.

Until I didn't change my phone, I hope this problem will be fixed !

I just folded up a piece of paper and wedged it under the dock connector after thoroughly cleaning it from all dust. The wedge of paper actually fixed it

my wife's iphone 4 with ios 6.1: suddenly no sound feedback. volume buttons didn't work, just the bell appeared. Problem: the iphone thought it was connected to a dock, although it wasn't.

Problem fix: I cleaned the dock connector with a small knife. There was a lot of dust and dirt stuck in there, which appearantly irritated the phone. Afterwards, the problem was solved. No need to wedge-in a piece of paper

    cheers

I installed the software update this morning and my sound also disappeared. Completed a retore and backup and still the same problem. When I plug my headphones in, it works fine. I dread trying to talk to Apple because you just get the runaround.

Factory reset the phone...Erase all contents and data---- When you are setting it up again; and here's the important part, choose a iCloud backup date well before the update occured. TO be sure I chose some date in December. Viola, my phone only had 6.0 on it and the SOUND is WORKING. Be sure not to update to 6.1 if you value your music and playing clips through the speaker as much as i do...

I had issue with the 6.1 upgrade on my iPhone 4S ever since the release of 6.1.

(Even playing thru headphones didn't work, due to the audio engine crashing)

I did the same as you, used a backup from october 2012, but still no sound.

After this backup was complete, i did a restore to the backup I had made prior to this test.

And voila, after reboot: I have sound again

There is something in the backups that resets the audio.

I went from 6.1.1. to a backup of 6.0.0 and then went back to a 6.1.1 backup.

I had the same issue! I did just about everything; cleaned charger port and headphone port with alcohol soaked toothbrush, cleaned with toothpick, used air dust, etc. my solution to this was to restore my iPhone 4S as a new iPhone and the sounds worked!!!!! Then I went back and restored my backup to my device!! I really hope this helps someone because I rarely write reviews but this ordeal was very frustrating to me!!!

I just did the IOS 6.1.2 update this morning ( because of the Exchange calendar fix). I now see my side volume control doesn't show the value of the the speaker / ringer. After looking at this post I did clean out the charging port to no avail, what I have noticed is that although it doesn't show a volume increase or decrease it is changing the volume. You can test this by clicking either up or down volume then push the "silent mode" button and remove from silent it will show where your volume control is at currently. So im pretty sure its working. I'm thinking the latest update IS the cause. JMHO.

Further investigation into this I have found that this also has stopped my speakers from working. I'm waiting for someone from Apple to fix this as I'm certain its a bug.
