Q: Problem WiFi while iPhone 4S is in screen lock

I hope they have a fix in next version of iOS. However, it really needs to have APPLE to admin the issue and they would change.

That's rather odd, because everyone else's does, unless it is connected to power. Try this:

Go to Settings/WiFi, tap on the arrow next to the network name, and write down the IP address.

Open a command window in Windows or a Terminal window on a Mac and type the following:

  Mac: ping <ip address>  (for example, ping 192.168.1.5)

Windows: ping /t <ip address>

Now press the power button on the phone. After about 30-45 seconds the pings will time out. Now wake up the phone and you will see the ping timeouts stop.

I have done few testing. You are correct. I think my eyes have lied to me.

iPhone 4 with iOS 5.0 in sleep mode - Cellular data off (airplane mode)

- time out when I tried to ping

- had connection when i pressed the home button to wake it up (but it took very quickly to reconnect)

iPhone 5 with iOS 6.0 in sleep mode - Cellular data off (airplane mode)

- time out when I tried to ping

- had connection when i pressed the home button to wake it up (but it took a bit longer time to reconnect compare to iPhone 4) - I am on WPA2 Enterprise wifi connection

my conclusion:

I think my iPhone 4 has been disconnecting the wifi connection in sleep mode, but it gets reconnect so quick once I press the home button, so I did not realize it was disconnected.

2nd thing I have noticed is:

when iPhone 5 in sleep mode and in airplane mode, I tried to send an iMessages from my iPhone 4, it surely got deliveried to iPhone5 and it woke it up. That is interesting. If the wifi was disconnected, how could I get the iMessages in iPhone 5? does the iOS connect to wifi automatically every now and then to check if there is any push? I do notice that there was a delay to delivery the message to iPhone 5 while it was in sleep mode, but it did delivery thou.

Hi, I notice the same with you, but I don't try iMessage but only whatsapp, and I notice that when my iPhone 4S is in sleep mode, wifi disappear, but howewer  I receve push notifications. I don't know how this is possible :-)

Hi, I have the same problem with an iPad Mini the WIFI stops working after a few minutes when the screen is locked. I installed the new version 6.0.1 and still the same problem. I did also reset the network settings. But no luck.

I have 2 other iPads but with iOS 5 (my kids), an iPhone 4s and an iPod Touch, and they all have the WIFI icon when the screen is lock and get notifications (on battery mode)

With my brand new iPad Mini when I try to use SIRI on the lock screen, she will remind me that she is not avaliable. My WIFI is AWOL !!!

I´m thinking of getting a replacement seeing that Apple is like always ignoring the end user.

As you would have learned if you read the other messages that were responses to these messages, the iPad is working exactly as it was designed to work. WiF IS turned off when the device is asleep to preserve battery.

If you do not want your WiFi to disconnect when you lock your device, you can try this simple workaround. It worked on my iPhone 5... Keep Wi-Fi connected while iPhone, iPod,…

installing VPN on, iPhone it may slow your device, try speed test without vpn, note the results,

after, install a vpn, follow your link, after installing vpn, then try the speed test, and compare the results, half of the result without vpn is very fast, example, without vpn your getting 20mbps, but when vpn is installed, its only on 5 to 8 mbps,

Just got off the phone with support and this is a known issue but they have a work around that so far works for me.

Don't select your wifi from the list of available networks click "Other..." down at the bottom of the list and recreate your connection by entering the SID and needed info.  So far so good.

Reset network settings also seems to work for some. Glad that they are aware of the issue. Thanks for the suggestion.

I have the same problem in all devices (iPhone 4, 4S and iPad 2 wifi) (All iOs 6.0.1)

I do not get notifications with a locked device. ---->(DATA OFF , WIFI ON)

I've tried everything: Reset router, reset network settings, Restore iOs, change WPA2 to WPA , etc etc etc.....

What i do? With iOS 5 don´t have this problem.

Any solution? I'm desperate

As to 6.1, be careful what you wish for. Haven't you seen all of the anguished messages that get posted after every release?

This problem needs update, and iPhone 5, iPad Mini,or any devices running on iOS 6 is not perfectly working regards on network, believe me coz im a iPhone 5 user,

not only when phone is lock or sleep wifi get disconnected, try also a speed test on iDevices running iOS 6 and make speed test on iDevices running iOS 5, & compare

to all: this problem cannot be solve by restarting router, restoring network, hard reset, or even updating firmware router, and more more more blah blah blah,

I spoke an apple tech, and they are aware of this issue, according to them this is a software problem, and it needs UPDATE !

dont waste your time doing non sense things, cause this is all about software issue!

iOS 6.1 betas solve the problem? Any developer to here?
