OS X 10.8.2 freezes frequently

Since I have upgraded to OS X 10.8.2 freezes frequently as soon as finder detects a Windows Executable file (.EXE).

Even if the .exe file is just selected with the mouse, MAC OS crashes immedialtely. Before 10.8.2 I had no problems whatsoever with those .exe files which I sometimes need for my windows PC.

Does anyone have a cure how to overcome the problem?

With best regards

Do you use Parallels or VM Fusion?

Your issue sounds crazy! Exe files shouldn't mean anything to a OS X unless you use parallels or vm fusion but even then I am not sure whether you can launch a windows app by clicking on the exe in the finder. I have parallels but I always use it in separate window and I never launch apps from outside window. I will take a look tomorow.

I use PD 8.0 but unfortunatelly I can't help you because I haven't upgraded to 10.8.2. I learned my lesson after the upgrade to Mountain Lion (had bad issues with dual monitors). Since then I don't trust anymore the Apple upgrades and I decided to do the upgrades after a month or so.

I suggest that you try muCommander (free, http://www.mucommander.com/) and see if you have the same problem with it. I personally don't like the osx finder app, and I always use muCommander. On the Windows side I use Altap Salamander (commercial, http://www.altap.cz/) instead of windows explorer. I wish they had a mac version. I don't know what I would do without Altap Salamander, it is an awesome product. There is also a text based file manager available for linux and probably osx called Midnight Commander but I have never tried it under OSX. All these file managers originate from the old Norton Commander (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_Commander).

Other ideas would be: check the parallels forums and eventually contact their support. You could also uninstall PD 8.0 and see if the problem persists and then install it back. When you uninstall it should not delete your vms.

Let us know how it goes.

@Marc197102:

When you say the "finder detects an windows executable file" do you mean when the finder displays the executable file (i.e. you go to a folder and the folder contans exe files) or, do you mean that you click on an exe file then it crashes or it takes a long time until something happens and OSX freezes? Is your VM running when you do this?

Thanks

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.

Step 1

Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Post the messages from the time of the last crash, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot.

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.

Step 2

Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

I also have an issue with freezes since the upgrade to mountain lion. Can not really link this to .EXE files.
