Voiceover and texting issue

Im a partially sighted user so i make use of voice over on the iphone, running ios 6. Im new to the product though so havent quite picked up on everything yet.

My issue at the moment is when i get a text, i cant seem to activate the 'response/reply' area when voice over is active. Not sure if im using the wrong touch commands or what. Currently i have to turn voiceover off to slide up the keyboard/response area (if that makes sense) and then turn voiceover back on. Im sure it should be possible without me having to turn it on and off?
