How do I make IOS 6 keep wifi on when iPod is sleeping?

Does your company IT utilize security (like 802.1x and/or NAC-Guest access) on the wireless network? That might be the reason for the system asking you to re-authenticate.

As I said, at some point, all access-points see the device logged off (like you walked out of the wifi coverage area, or turned off wireless yourself manually).

I guess, at home you're not having a problem, as you're probably using only WPA to encrypt the connection...

Unfortunately, iOS6 is really not stable at this. The period required for the device to de-authenticate itself from the AP (even it's the same AP) changes. And, sometimes, a reboot may fix the situation, unfortunately for a definite amount of time, when it starts to happen again.

I'm reading 6.0.2 doesn't solve it either. I guess we'll have to wait for 6.1 to see if Apple finds this interesting enough to fix 😟

I have a 2nd gen Ipod touch, my neice has a 4, her sister has a 3, I have a 3rd gen iphone, I tried t update iso and now all of them are locked to black page with apple logo. Itunes will not even discover any of them..

Try DFU mode etc. But, is your post really relevant to this topic?

Hi. In my experience with iPod and iPhone neither of them have disconnected while in sleep. This maybe because your device is low on power(sometimes my iPhone disconnects on about 5% power). Try plugging it in while in sleep mode

DFU doesn't always work. As within it's limits you need to place it into recovery mode.

I have fixed it.Before doing steps turn wifi on. Steps 1.click on wifi your connected to in wifi settings

2.click renew lease then go back

3.then turn ask to join networks on

4.now turn wifi off then back on

5.wait for iPad to connect to wifi automatically

6.then lock iPad then before you unlock check in status bar for

wifi bars and if there your done if not your screwed

Sorry for scrambles but when I typed it it did not look anything close to that when I typed it it was perfect.

I had the same issue on my new Ipad.

Fixed by doing the following

- Under Settings, Wi-Fi connect to your wifi network (enter password if applicable)

- Under Settings, Wi-Fi select "ask to join networks" = ON

- Under Settings, Wi-Fi select "Wi-Fi" OFF, then ON

Check that your network now automatically connects. It'll now do the same if your device sleeps or you close the cover on the new IPAD

Basically when you go to select which wifi you want, select "other" instead and enter it manually! It will stay connect all the time!

I found out that by disabling wi-fi sync on iTunes is leaving my wi-fi intact and everything is working fine. Receiving notifications when my 4S (iOS 6.0.1) is in sleep mode just fine. Just reset network settings and never synchronize with iTunes over wi-fi again. So yeah, just stay away from wi-fi sync at all costs.

I am having the same problem as everyone else. Apple, please fix this. This happens on both my iPad 3 ("The New iPad") and my iPhone 5. The major problem for is that I use my iPad at work and I have to login to the network every time I get knocked off, adding another step to the process. I've found that if I leave the iPad on or plugged in, I'm fine. It is only when I turn it off and unplug it that I get kicked off in about 15 minutes. It would be great if they either eliminated this or including a setting so we could take care of it. Thanks.

Found a solution for those whose wifi won't even reconnect automatically when the iPad wakes up. Instead of connecting to your network when it shows in 'available networks', go to 'other' and type in the details manually. I did this and now it reconnects straight away when it wakes up.

Still, I wish wifi would remain on like it used to when it was sleeping. Suddenly just started turning off for no apparent reason. I have an iPad 2 with latest version of iOS 6. It was working fine after I installed the latest update, so no idea why it's screwing up now.

I read somewhere else that iOS 6.1 fixes this issue...well for me it does not.

HERE'S THE SOLUTION:

I came accross this issue all over the net, with no real solution. So I did some testing and this is what I found.

(An update to iOS 6 was released today..unfortunately that still didn't fix the problem..for me anyway).

From what I understand:

This new 'feature' of iOS6 dissables the wifi radio when an iOS device has been in sleep for abit, but it also somehow turns the iOS device's wifi radio back on when it needs to (i.e. when a push email/ notification/ imessage is coming through) even when the device is in sleep. This is when the feature works. But there is a buggy loophole that arrises which causes the wifi radio to not automatically 're-engage' when it should.

If you find that you only get emails/notificaitons and imessages when you wake up your ios device, and not as they come in, it's because, at some point, you have done a series of actions that result in the wireless radio not knowing how to turn itself on when in sleep.

This is how you fix it

1) Turn wifi on (doesn't matter if you connect to a wifi network now or later, but the wifi toggle must be on). If your ios device supports mobile data, turn it off for now.

2) Turn off the device (by keeping the sleep button pressed and then swiping)

Wait 30s

3) Turn it on

4) After the home screen loads, reset it (hold the home and sleep buttons down and keep holding until you see the apple logo)

That's it.

Now, when your device is in sleep, the wifi radio will re-engage when it needs to.

People with 3G always on won't experience this problem because when an iPad/ iPhone is in sleep (and hence, the wifi radio is turned off), having the mobile/cellular data on somehow wakes up the wifi radio if messages and stuff are coming in.

Below are the series of actions (if you're curious) that you have done at some point in time that have caused the wifi radio to forget to reengage when in sleep: (so there's a set of actions to induce the bug, and to hide it)

Turn wifi off

Turn off device

Turn on device

Reset device

Turn on wifi

Now you won't get push emails and stuff when your device is sleeping.

This worked like a charm!! Thank you.
