Q: How do I make IOS 6 keep wifi on when iPod is sleeping?

Hi, I've been very annoyed by IOS 6 disconnecting from the wifi after a few minutes in sleep mode. I need my iPod to stay connected at all times so I can receive information and get a ringer notification the moment I get anything (examples are e-mail, texts from texting apps, skype calls, etc.). I really dont like having to keep checking my iPod and reconnecting every now and then just to see if I got something. I am considering changing back to IOS 5 just to get my iPod to stay connected 24/7 but I don't want to do that unless I know that there is no hope for me in IOS 6.

Okay, I did the Erase and iCloud restore and it did not make a change with the Wi-Fi problem. Thanks anyway for your help. I just hope Apple will fix with the next released with the next update.

I have figured out a workaround for the wifi cut out problem, it's slightly annoying to do every time you turn your device back on but it's not all that bad. You turn your device on, turn the wifi on and let it connect, then close settings and kill the app from multi task, then restart your device (wifi should still be on) then after you restart it, the wifi should stay connected no matter if the device is active or sleeping. The annoying part is that you have to repeat these steps every time you turn you device off when the wifi is also off.

Well, data connection is more battery draining than connected to WIFI. This feature *****. And I think the whole ios6 *****.

There is a really simple workaround that you only need to do once! Basically when you go to select which wifi you want, select "other" instead and enter it manually! It will stay connect all the time!

I have the same stupid issue on iPhone 4. I hope for an update as soon as posible.

The soloution proposed by jridg103 worked for me. I will try to do more tests, but it seems to keep WiFi connection active after the phone is going to sleep/lock mode.

I am using an iPhone 4 with iOS 6 and have not experienced this disconnect of WIFI during sleep.  After reading all the threads here, I decided to see if what others claim to be a fact that it does because it's supposed to I did some testing of my own.  I find this would be really stupid for Apple to setup iOS to lose WIFI during sleep strange for several features wouldn't work.  On my iPhone 4 I streamed some music using an app called TuneIn Radio Pro (which gives you a WIFI/cellular counting within the app) and began with WIFI connected.  I manually put it to sleep and streamed for 5 mins or so.  I unlocked the phone and checked the readings, and there's was only WIFI data downloaded, and my cellular was still at 0.  To double check this, I went into the iPhones settings and checked there as well, and again no cellular usage was increased before the streaming over WIFI.  I DID NOT have the iPhone plugged into power either it was solely on battery.  Another situation I have proved this to not happen.....I have the new iPad WIFI only and stream videos via Airplay to my Apple TV with the iPad in sleep mode once I start the video stream, and again, no issues of disconnect.  For Apple to design iOS to lose WIFI during sleep would be plain stupid for iDevices that do not have a cellular ability such has streaming music thru a docking speaker system, it doesn't make sense to leave your screen on all the time to stay connected to WIFI as this would drain your battery faster the the WIFI connection.  I am not saying that as long as no apps are accessing the WIFI connection there may be a disconnect then, but as long as there is data being transferred during a WIFI connection and the iDevices sleeps, it should continue to use that source.

I had the same problem using my iPod Touch 4G. I hated it when someone commented on my FB posts or IG photos or any IM app and I needed to touch the home button every now and then, until I found Gizmodo's solution here: http://gizmodo.com/5944761/does-ios-6-have-a-wi+fi-bug!

    Just do the ff:

Settings>Wi-Fi>("Your Network")> [the blue circle arrow icon]

Scroll to bottom of screen and set HTTP Proxy to Auto

Hope it helps to all of you!

Ios 6 has had some problems concerning WiFi, my ipod has been doing the same thing since i updated it. for some time like when its asleep it disconnects to the WiFi only after a few minutes does it come back and work properly.

maybe thats why the new ipod has better WiFi intergrated features aswell as the iPhone 5. its a problem that apple will resolve soon, when a new ios comes out like ios 6.1.3 or something like that.

I had this problem as well.  After some googling, I came across a thread where someone indicated that the Wireless-N was implemented differently on the 2.4 GHz band on iOS 6.  They suggested trying the 5 GHz band - which I did (on my iPad).  I haven't had a single problem with WiFi in sleep mode since then.  Unfortunately, I don't think that the iPod supports the 5 GHz band...

I have updated both my iPhone 4 and iPad 3 to iOS 6.0.1 and the wifi problem isn't fixed, when my devices go to sleep the wifi disconnects making my iPad useless
