Mailbox problems with OSX server 10.8 Any suggestions?

I am upgrading from 10.5.8 to 10.8. I am having problems getting mail to function. At start up I get the message mail cannot save information about your mail boxes because of a network problem". I suspect this is a dns problem. Any suggestions?

Mark and Bob, Thank you for you quick responses.

I should clarify. I am actually moving everything to a new macmini server with mountain lion 10.8.1. I upgraded to 10.8.1 after receiving the new server. Because we are a small group I actually started from scratch and re-enetered all of the mailbox info as well as everything else.

Repairing permissions did locate some faulty permisisons but non in the mail files. But restarting resulted in the same message.

Things have improved some. After much ado with the app store I was able to download 10.8.2. That did indeed help. However I am still trying to get Server 2.1 so that it will download. The App store doesn't want to allow the download. I have put in a request through express lane but nothing has happened.

Currently, I am getting some downloads but am unable to upload. Both the server logs and connection doctor (client end) indicate that there is an authentication problem with pop. However, I am very sure that the user name and passwords are the same at both ends and my reading of the logs indicates that the authentication method is the same at both ends, it just won't authenticate. Is this likely a problem that will be cured with the upgrade to server 2.1. Currently I have authentication set for custom with APOP, CRAM-MD5, and Clear Text. There is an automatic setting. Would setting to automatic and then re-establishing the client end be of any value.

Thanks in advance or any assistance.

The Express Lane is indeed the way to go for things that just won't download from the App Store.

If you're on a wireless connection, please try a wired one when downloading as a wired connection is historically faster and more stable due to the nature of wireless internet.

What do you mean with "unable to upload"?

POP uses TCP port 110 for a non-secure connection and TCP port 995 for a secure connection, make sure the server is reachable on those ports, i.e. by telnetting. I'd use IMAPS instead of POP3, that is the secure version of IMAP and works on TCP port 993, so the users would have all their mail anywhere they go.

It wouldn't hurt to try the Automatic Setting I guess, if it were only to test if the client is able to connect.

Thank you Mark

In the end, express lane proved helpful. We solved the upgrade problem but then determined that the main user account was corrupted. Took quite a bit of doing to get that straight. Like some others have experienced, I thought I had lost the server information when I upgraded to Server 2.1 but after entering the first couple of screens all of the server information was recovered. I am now in the process of checking out the mail server. Looks like I still have the authentication issue but I think that we have now cleared away the other issues so that we can concentrate on that one.

Thanks again and I will let you know how this comes out.
