I have Vizio sound bar and tried to connect Apple TV using toslink cable.
Can't get ANY sound.
Aside from removing the nibs on the cable, what am I doing wrong?

When I changed the input to apple tv, The sound is still playing from the cable program but the apple tv video is showing. This just started happening out of the blue. The dolby digital trick didn't work for me. Any other ideas?
I have a Vizio TV and sound bar. Apple TV worked flawlessly until a few days ago. I change input from Directv to AppleTV and the sound from Directv is still audible while Apple TV video plays. I checked everything twice, rest Apple TV and vizio tv was put back to factory settings. Still doesn't work. If I shut sound bar off, Apple TV works through Tv speakers. I even bought the most recent Apple TV and it still does the same thing. Very frustrating. Any ideas?
It's not the soundbar it's the Apple TV settings. Go to the menu under audio/Video look for Dolby Digital and change to off, this will do the trick. Some have said that the audio output needs to be on 16 bit as well but mine wasn't changed and it works great. I use a Vizio VSB210 soundbar with wireless Sub.
WoW! I have been trying to solve this problem for almost a year. Spent HOURS on phone with Vizeo Tech support. Returned and got new soundbar 2x. Vizeo told me it was my TV. I was about to buy a new one but decided to try it one last time. It would work intermittantly with no rhyme or reason and then I noticed it lost the sound when I switched from DVD player to Apple TV so I suspected the AppleTv. Googled it, found your post, switched off Dolby and Voila! THANK YOU!!!!
