Is there any way to update this at all?
I used to be able to purchase and use apps, but I can no longer use this device for that purpose.

The latest version of iOS for a 1st gen Touch is iOS 3.1.3, which I assume is what you have, not iOS 3.1.2. You cannot update beyond iOS 3.1.3. Sorry.
