iOS 6 disables wi-fi on sleep mode - disappointing

I'm still quite not sure as to whether this was intentional or not. As I've read on other discussion threads, some people like it, however, MOST people do not.

I personally dislike it. It takes away, for me, somewhat a nice feature of having push notifications: that you can get notifications anytime, 24/7(given you are connected to wi-fi or you have your mobile data on) even when the iPhone is on sleep mode. And since there is the Do Not Disturb feature, it won't be much a of a problem if it's about the notifications disturbing you.

If it's about battery saving, well, it does help. But I think, if it is(which we're still not sure) intentional that the iOS 6 disables wi-fi on sleep mode, Apple should at least add an option for us to choose as to whether we would like to keep the wi-fi on, or off when the iPhone/iPad/iPod is on sleep mode.

As with most people, I would like to keep my wi-fi on, anytime, anywhere, and it's up to me to deal with the battery consumption.

Thoughts please?

What's the different thing that's happening on your 5 but not your 4s?

the 5 is working fine.. it stays connected to wifi once I bring it out of sleep, the 4S will not no matter what I have tried. Everytime I bring it out of sleep, I'm having to go into settings and selecting the same wifi connection.. and it's getting old.. I'm calling Apple later today, because it's ticking me the heck off. I have tried the hints here and just got done trying the iTunes thing and it still will not connect to wifi once it's out of sleep.

Please do tell us how it will go with Apple. Thanks

Well, first tech I got, tried to help with the suggestion of the airplane mode trick.. didn't work. tried reboot and it didn't work. First tech said "we are aware that there are some iPhones that can not keep the wifi connection and we are working on it.."

Second Tech when I called back to verify phone was not working, said they had no information on my case ticket that rep #1 gave me. After getting the serial # off my phone, she hung up on me.. I waited for a return call since they take a number in case we get disconnected, no return phone call.

Third Rep.. I was rude and insisted on talking to a supervisor.. Got a supervisor on the phone.. Says same thing, they are aware of the problem. He suggested I do a full restore and set up as a new phone. I've done that twice with no success. I'm to call him back now.. for a replacement on the phone. LMAO. I just don't get it..

They seem to say it's a software issue, but they want to give me a new refurb phone? oh well. I have a call into the supervisor now, saying that the restore as new iphone didn't work, so I'm just waiting for a call back. LOL

I'm even more confused now. I've been doing some testing and here's where I'm at:

iPhone 4S (iOS 6)

iPad 2 WiFi-only (iOS 6)

Both devices exhibiting the same behavior.

On my home WiFi things suddenly seem to be working perfectly as they did before the iOS 6 upgrade. Both devices stay connected as expected. This is evident by the iPad receiving emails even though it's a WiFi-only device. My home WiFi uses WPA security.

On my corporate WiFi things still are not working as they did on iOS 5. From what I've been told the security on the corporate network is WPA2 Enterprise. If someone knows how to confirm please let me know. On this network it still drops the WiFi connection upon locking the device and therefore my iPad is virtually useless in a meeting. I don't get email alerts and we use an IM app that now doesn't alert because I'm not connected.

Does anyone know why it would be different? I've read about issues with WPA2 but those issues indicated that users couldn't connect at all. That is not my problem. I tried updating the proxy setting that I read about in these threads but that hasn't helped on my corporate network.

This is very frustrating.

Having the same problem since update to iOS6. When iphone goes to sleep it drops wi-fi connection.

I never had this problem until iOS6 update. I work in an area that has no cell phone coverage but a very good

wi-fi signal. I normally get facetime calls when I am there, but nobody is able to reach me since I switch to iOS6.

No FaceTime, no iMessages either. When I wake the iPhone then I start to get my messages again.

I also notice that when iPhone is in sleep mode I went online with laptop totry and find my iPhones location and it comes up as unaviliable. Then I wake the iPhone and no location is found on the laptop. This has all started since iOS6 update.

Lawrance,

So many people shared their experinces with different iPhone models and IOS versions, however, you guys are still ignoring them and saying that wi-fi drops in sleeping mode on all IOS versions.

So here is a good test for you guys.

I have 2 x iPhone 4 32GB and 1 x iPhone 5 64GB and iPad 2 16GB. Here is situation

iPhone 4 with IOS 5.1.1 wi-fi DOES NOT drop on sleeping mode.

iPhone 4 with IOS 6 wi-fi DROPS on sleeping mode.

iPhone 5 with IOS 6 wi-fi DROPS on sleeping mode.

iPad 2 with IOS 5.1.1 wi-fi DOES NOT drop on sleeping mode.

So it is very clear that it has started with IOS 6.

He's not wrong. Maybe everyone is getting caught up on the technicality of "drop". However, there are hundreds of posts on forums since the release of iOS 6 about this problem. Whatever you want to call it, it's an issue. Like I mentioned in my earlier post, I have an iPad 2 WiFi-only. When I'm in meetings at work it's basically a useless device. A few seconds after it sleeps it drops the WiFi connection so I no longer receive push emails, IMs, FaceTime calls, etc.

Like I also previously mentioned, it does not do this on my home WiFi which is WAP (work is WPA2 Enterprise). It's doing the same thing on my iPhone 4S with iOS 6. When it's plugged into power this is not a problem. So, they obviously coded it to drop when not connected to power to save battery. This was not happening in iOS 5.

That is what's happening. That is the bottom line. Call it whatever you want. I'm calling it a problem.
