Q: iOS 6 disables wi-fi on sleep mode - disappointing

I'm still quite not sure as to whether this was intentional or not. As I've read on other discussion threads, some people like it, however, MOST people do not.

I personally dislike it. It takes away, for me, somewhat a nice feature of having push notifications: that you can get notifications anytime, 24/7(given you are connected to wi-fi or you have your mobile data on) even when the iPhone is on sleep mode. And since there is the Do Not Disturb feature, it won't be much a of a problem if it's about the notifications disturbing you.

If it's about battery saving, well, it does help. But I think, if it is(which we're still not sure) intentional that the iOS 6 disables wi-fi on sleep mode, Apple should at least add an option for us to choose as to whether we would like to keep the wi-fi on, or off when the iPhone/iPad/iPod is on sleep mode.

As with most people, I would like to keep my wi-fi on, anytime, anywhere, and it's up to me to deal with the battery consumption.

Thoughts please?

Something is definetely different in iOS6 to previous incarnations of iOS.

We have a open WiFi access point at work and  once you connect to the access point you then need to go to a browser page where you put in a username and password.

Now previously, although Wifi switched off when the phone went to sleep it would immediately reconnect when waking and it would REMEMBER the login details and work pretty much straight away unless i went out of the building after which when I returned I had reauthenticate.

Howerver, now , in iOS6 I have to reenter my details even after a minute of sleep without leaving the building.

SO ther eis definetely something different than before in how the the security details are cached and I expect this to be fixed with the next update.

hey! i have a question about your apparent fix, and i hope i can try it too.

So basically, ill back up my iphone, wipe out all data, and then INSTALL IOS 6 through itunes WITHOUT restoring from back-up?

All i did was plug my iphone into my macbook pro, I let it sync in Itunes to back it up, I then clicked restore. Then after that i put IOS 6 on it (can't remember if it did that automatically).

    Then the problem was solved!

When complete, turn phone wifi on, lock your phone, then on your computer send an email to yourself and see if it comes through on the iphone...

If you restore it, it will automatically get the iOS from the back up...

I confirm that I have the same issue here, upgraded my iPad to IOS6 and since then it keeps dropping the wifi in sleep mode (sometimes seconds after a press the button)

This has never been an issue in IOS5

Therefore the device is totally useless and I am totally ****** off

Can someone please clarify something? When you do the restore step are you restoring from the most recent backup essentially restoring your phone to its last state or do you first need to do a factory reset and the. Restore from backup? Or factory reset, install iOS 6, and then restore from backup? I have a 4S so factory reset would roll me back to iOS 5 I presume.

I'm unclear on the exact steps to take. If I did backup and then restore, I would have no need to download iOS 6 because the restore would take care of that for me.

I, as well am curious about that.

Because if I back up and I'm on IOS 6, it would back it up.

But i dont know if backing it up, wiping data off of iphone, and installing ios 6 through itunes THEN restoring data through itunes would do the trick.

will it keep the itunes downloaded ios 6 or load the backed up ios 6?

So yeah, the person who posted the fix didnt make it clear.

Does the DND feature affect this?

I wondered if having DND on shuts off the wifi even if you are connected to a power source?

REALLY good question! I'll try testing that.

OK, just tested it on my 4S. WiFi stays on when plugged in even if DND is on.

I've read most of the responses here, and I haven't seen anyone say anything close to what happened to me.. so I'll post it here.

I got my 5 the other day, works great so far. Gave my 4S to a family member.. (by the way I never had any problems with my 4S with ios6)

Got the family member hooked up with my 4S, I thought everything was working fine until it went into sleep mode. Once in sleep mode it disconnects from wifi.. When I try and wake it up, it will not reconnect automatically. I have to go into settings and select the wifi.. It ***** butt.. Have no problem with my 5 and never had a problem with the 4S before. On that note though, I do have iCloud turned off.. and I know all settings are correct. it get's old to have to keep going in and selecting the wifi connection to use.

Any ideas as to what the heck is going on?

    Thanks.

This isn't a new problem; it's been posted for other versions of iOS. The usual advice is:

    1. Reboot your router

    2. Forget the network, reboot the phone, then reconnect to the network

    3. Settings/General/Reset - Reset network settings.

None of these are destructive to data. 2. and 3. will require re-entering your WiFi passphrase.

There also MAY be a problem with WPA2 and iOS 6 (there have been random reports). So if you use WPA2 you may want to switch it to WPA or WEP to see if that resolves the issue, if the above steps don't help.

Emanuele, thanks for confirming. I'm still unclear though as to the exact steps. Did you restore from your backup or did you do a factory reset, then install iOS 6, then restore from your backup? What device do you have?

iPhone 4s updated to iOs 6 from latest iOS 5 release.

    The bug was there.

Then i performed a cleaned iOs 6 installation, but it continued to no work. Therefore, I decided to restore my apps with iTunes.

Two hours ago, i made the three Lawrence's step and i have notifications during sleep mode (I recevied the notification of your reply in sleep mode)
