Q: Temp fix for iOS 6 not pushing Exchange mail

All,

If you are reading this, you are probable having the same problem as I am:

After you switched to the iPhone 5, Exchange mail is no longer PUSHing to your device.  I have done testing and this problem affects:

1) iPhone 5's running connecting to Exchange 2007 or Exchange 2010 servers.

This does not effect:

1) my iPhone 4S running iOS 6 Beta 6.0 10A5376e

Troubleshooting:

1) Wiped phone and started with completely fresh iOS 6 on my iPhone 5. The only thing I did was add my exchange account.

-Still had same issue.

** How to fix this issue:

1. Go to Mail, Contacts, and Calendar.  Click "Fetch New Data".  Make sure push is on.

2.  Go back to Mail, Contact, and Calendar.  Click on your exchange account. Click on "Days to Sync".  Even if it is set to what you want this on, chance it to a different setting (i.e. 1 week).  You can change this back later, but this is the only way to fix it.

3. Go back to Mail COntact and Calendar.  Click on "Show".  No matter what this setting is on, change it to a different setting. (i.e. 100 recent messages).

4.  Reboot your iPhone 5

5.  Exchange PUSH will be working now.

Thanks,

Clay

Verizon customer here - and same issues.  Tried all the "fixes" with only temporary results for push mail.  This problem is widespread and also very "random".  Some folks with exactly the same settup, on the same carriers with the same i5's - do not have the issue.  Although I would say that I see more complaints with Verizon.  This is very disappointing indeed!

It is a sad thing when we pay the ridiculous prices that we do for an anticipated product and have it "fail" on something that should be rudimentary by now.  With so many devices being replaced this has to be a very expensive oversight.  I have had more setup issues with this device that with any other Apple product that I have ever owned.  I really like the phone, but this has taken a bit of the "thrill" out of wonership.

Coming from a Blackberry (although long time iPad user), I still love the iPhone 5.   I suspect that this issue will be worked out with an iOS updated soon.

I wonder if its worth an exchange for another iPhone 5 since some users are not having this issue?  Could it be dependent on a particular batch of iPhone 5s?

Perhaps, but I've already exchaged mine twice.  Once from the apple store and the other from Verizon.  Still same issue.

I have read about folks that are on their 2nd or 3rd phone with the same results.  So, I guess it would be a gamble.

    Hi sirish,

I removed icloud, rebooted, same issue, no push.

I deleted the account altogether from the phone.

Now I am testing out something else.  I actually have two iCloud accounts, an original paid for MobileMe Account and an account associated with my Apple ID. I generally use the Me account because it was larger so have always been using that to set up iCloud.

I tried restoring the phone to factory settings and only set up the exchange account.  E-mail sending, receiving and push all working flawlessly.  I then set up iCloud but rather than using the Me account, I used the Apple ID account (had to create an iCloud mail address for that). Anyway, got it all set up and it worked perfectly in conjunction with the Exchange account.

Next, I deleted the iCloud account from the phone and then again set up the Me iCloud account and, sure enough, after a couple of minutes, I am back stuck at the Checking for Mail.... Error.

As an additional note, I am using the Me iCloud account on my iPhone 3GS (running IOS 5) and the New iPad (running IOS 6) and I am not having Exchange issues with either of those.

It's not your hardware. Apple created a bug in their push notification software from Exchange servers. There is some complex set of circumstances that trigger the failure. Don't bother to try to find the cause yourself or some magic set of steps to avoid the failure. They just have to find the bug and fix it.

This has happened multiple times before with past iOS releases. Search the forums (particularly Enterprise) and you will see multiple complaints years back about lost push notifications. I encountered it at least twice between my 3G and 4, and now my new 5.

You would think that with the (at least) 4 rounds of Beta builds and testing over many months that this would have been found, but I suppose not. Apparently, it's tied to the iPhone 5 implementation of iOS 6 as earlier phones don't seem to experience the issue.

BlackBerry push email is know to be rock solid and extremely stable. Apple should take notice if they want to be taken seriously as an Enterprise solution.

I've already exchanged mine before finding this thread and still no go....

This is definitely a problem between the iOS "talking" to the new LTE chip for CDMA data usage.   When I am connected to Wi-Fi and I turn off cellular data, everything works as it should.   Once I turn cellular data on, after a short period of time the push service crashes and Exchange push, iMessage and push notification for other applications fail.

It seems that the programming between the iOS new LTE chip for HSPA+ (AT&T) data is still working hence why users of AT&T iphone 5s are working fine.   One of my co-workers is getting the iPhone 5 on AT&T today, so I will see first hand if it in fact works once connecting it to our Exchange server.

OK, I deleted the Me iCloud account again, rebooted, and set up the Apple ID iCloud account.  Working fine so far.  Will leave it overnight (I am in Japan) and see how it is working tomorrow.

It seems like there may be multiple issues going on here, as some users are reporting problems limited to Exchange, while others, including myself, are experiencing an issue with ALL push notification, including iCloud, Exchange, iMessage, and third-party apps—and are seeing the apsd crashes. The apsd crashs do not precisely line up with when push fails, so my suspicion is these are only a sympton of a larger problem with apsd.

I have noticed, in my limited testing, that it seems to work without incident when I have Wi-Fi on and cellular data off, as BeeJaay00 also noted. But I haven't done enough testing in this configuration to really know whether this makes a difference or it's just a coincidence that it hasn't crashed yet like that.

Please keep updating this thread. I believe Apple does watch the discussions to see what issues are affecting the most users and deserve higher priority.

I just (about 1 hour ago) took the above mentioned advice and turned my Verizon Cellular data off and just went with WiFi.  Push has been working since!  This is the most consistency I have gotten out of this device so far.

    Follow up!

With Verizon Cellular data off and WiFi on - I can get everything, calls, iMessages, FaceTime, Web and push mail.  When I "also" turned off WiFi I could get phone calls and iMessages, but no FaceTime, Web or push mail.

Obviously Cellular Data is conflicting with WiFi when they are both activated.  Could that be why so many are having issues with a good solid WiFi connection?

BeeJaay00, definitely let us know if Exchange crashes on AT&T.  I've got employees in my enterprise shop with the new 5 on AT&T and Exchange Push exhibits the same behavior throughout this thread.  APSD crashes all over the place in the phone's logs.  I believe Frank also has AT&T with the same issues in his posts above.

Going on a week with nothing back from any engineers or support on our end.  Bad news for Apple's enterprise business.

After about 4 hours, it still seems to be working for me by using the Apple ID iCloud account rather than the legacy MobileMe account. Sounds like there are several different issues going on here but this seems to be working for me.

Interesting - my push notifications are not working (again) but this time I confirmed I do not have an apsd crash log for it. SysMon says apsd has been running for over a day.

Toggling Airplane Mode did not work. I had to do a full restart.

So, perhaps apsd is either crashing (will kill your push notifications for sure) or hanging. Looks like either one will hose your push.

    Still waiting for a fix.
