How do I add a loyalty card to passbook?

How do I add a loyalty card to passbook? I just updated the to iOS6 on my iPhone 4 and the passbook app is there but I can't do anything in it. I am not quite sure how to add things like a gift card from starbucks or a local grocery store loyalty card. Any help would be appreciated.
