Podcast playback resuming after using Siri or getting a call

Hello,

I listen to podcasts using my car radio via bluetooth connection or using headphones with my iPhone 5 running iOS 6.

When I stop my car or pull out my EarPods during playback the playback stops just the way it did with the iOS 5 music app. I do not pause the playback manually.

When I get a call or use Siri afterwards the playback just resumes afte the call is ended / aborted / not answerd or when I close Siri after usage. Now I need to pause the playback manually. This is pretty bad when I am at work or even worse in a meeting and my podcasts just start playing when I do not answer a call.

This only happens with the Podcasts app. I tried it with the music app and playback did not start after doing the procedure which bring the podcasts bug.

The same problem also occured with my old iPhone 4 but just with calls (because of a lack of Siri).

Are some of you having the same issues?

Here is how I can reproduce the bug:

1. Plug in your earphones (I used the EarPods)

2. Start Podcast playback using the Apple Podcasts app

3. During playback just pull out your earphones (playback should stop now)

Now do either:

a)

4. Use Siri (just saying "Test" worked fine for me. It also worked when I just started Siri and closed it after the beep sound)

5. Close Siri

or b)

4. Call your iPhone with another phone

5. Block the call / do not answer it / answer it (each of them should work, blocking ist the fastest way)

6. Now playback should resume where it stopped when you unplugged your earphones

Would be nice if you give some feedback to me and apple whether you also have this problem.

Regards

Fennek

Hi GuGascoigne, welcome to Apple discussions.

I don't want to stop the email notifications because I too want to stay informed and I am hoping that someone has a solution.

So you are aware, these discussion forums are not for reporting things to Apple. They do not read them. This is a user contributed site to share knowledge. If you wish to give Apple feedback you can do so here.

Having this issue too. Getting very annoying when all of a sudden my phone starts blasting music at me with the iPhone 5's very powerful internal speaker at very inappropriate situations.

@DLR - Thanks for your input but these forums are here for a reason. The more people voice their opinion about this issue, the more exposure it gets and the more likely it will be fixed sooner rather than later.

If everyone kept quiet about it then the issue would look a lot less widespread than it already is.

Hi HapaKolea,

Welcome to the Apple discussion boards. A little word of advice. You will recieve much more help in here if you are nice.

I do have the same problem, and I do not have a solution but I do have an alternative as I mentioned before. Use the music app instead. And yes, you can still use the Music app to play podcasts.

The first time you use the Podcast app it migrates your podcasts into it. To go back all you have to do is the following:

  1. Delete the Podcast app.
  2. In iTunes select your phone and make sure that the podcasts are checked to sync.
  3. Sync your phone.
  4. On your phone double tab the home button to reveal the apps still running in the background.
  5. Hold down your finger on one of the apps until the shake and show little minus signs in the top right corner.
  6. Quit the Music app if it is running, by touching the minus sign.
  7. Touch the home button once.
  8. Reopen the Music app and you will now see your podcasts.

@Ramzy, I hear what you are saying. You are right in a sense. It does bump the issue, but not in an effective way, in my opinion. Regardless, my earlier point to the poster was that it is not the place to plead for Apple to fix it. There are other channels for that.

No worries, I reread my comments and they too may have come off in the wrong tone. I swear one needs to say things in such a neutral tone in order not to be misinterpetted in emails and discussion boards.

I honestly was just trying to be helpful.

Let me know if you have any questions regarding the above procedure. I just did it again myself and it worked fine.

When you say "It says that the podcast app is required to download a podcast," where are you reading this?

  1. On your phone, open the music app.
  2. Tap the "More" tab at the bottom.
  3. Click Podcasts
  4. Select a podcast
  5. At the bottom of the list of podcasts, you will see "Get More Episodes..."

That is one way of downloading them directly to your phone. This only works from the Music app after you follow my steps in the earlier post and if you have at least one podcast (of the desired podcaster) on your phone. If you do not have any podcasts by that podcaster, they will not be listed in step #4 - It only lists podcasts you have on the device.

As for avoiding the need for a computer all together, that is the benefit of using the Podcast app.
