My issue was 100% down to the podcast app. In iOS 6, podcasts were moved out of the music library and into a new podcast app. My download on wi-fi of a 70mb podcast file failed for whatever reason and my phone switched to 3G and retried the download the whole night, despite the "do not use cellular data" switch enabled. All the extra data usage wasn't even registered on the phones data counter.

Lots of people have complained about the app, and I've had no data leak since removing it!

I've had 3 iPhones and never had issues until this one large problem.

Does this podcast app issue get fixed with the 6.0.1 update ? or would you recommend deleting the podcast app anyway.  I dont ever use podcasts so no loss for me in that department.

I wonder when MTN and Vodacom are gonna catch up to Cell C out of bundle rate of 15c !?

If they have Black in stock i should have my phone tomorrow... hold thumbs ! for no data issue and color in stock lol

There is still a data leak on the iphone 5 after the update. I have my data turned off now because when it was on (even though push emails, icloud etc were disabled) there was a constant stream of data being used. It got worse when i was away from WIFI. It was incremental increases that would amount to 2-3MB per day, but who knows if there would be addtional spikes. We should not have to pay for data that we are not using.  Apple really needs to look into this. I am getting tired of their NONEXISTANT customer service.

Let me ask you guys this quick question.

With regard to Screen protector and case.

Do you use a screen protector ?

I see many posts/complaints that the "bumper" has damaged iphones, scuffed the metal part.

What do you think ? whats the best protection to use on the iphone if any ?

This thread is about excessive data use, you can ask this question and get a better response in a new thread.

Here is the situation with my AT&T iPhone 5, iOS 6.0.1.

    1. Settings-->General-->Cellular-->ON

    2. Settings --> Wi-Fi --> ON and connected to good network and verified connected to the Internet

    3. Settings-->Podcasts-->Use Cellular Data-->Off

Then, download a podcast --> No cellular data used

Next, interrupt Wi-Fi by either turning Settings-->Wi-Fi-->OFF or unplugging your Wi-Fi router

Then, download a podcast-->Cellular data is used for entire download until Wi-Fi is reconnected, even though Settings-->Podcasts-->Use cellular data is OFF.  This occurs without warning unless the single podcast is over 50MB, in which case you get the "Connect to a Wi-Fi network" but it still continues the download over cellular.

I suggest that Settings-->Podcasts-->Use cellular data-->OFF should mean Podcasts should never use cellular data, regardless of the status of the Wi-Fi connection.

I too have had huge AT&T data bills because Wi-Fi either dropped out or wasn't sufficient during a podcast download, even though Settings-->Podcasts-->Use cellular data-->OFF.

Am I missing something here?  This appears to be a bug in iOS 6.0.1.  Until then, to avoid using cellular data when downloading a podcast on Wi-Fi, I suggest turning Settings-->General-->Cellular-->OFF.

Just checked my iPhone 4 with iOS 6.0.1.  Same problem.  Can anyone else duplicate?  Does it occur in any prior iOS?  Headed to the Apple Store today to meet with the Genius Bar.  More later.

Same problem here too.  Before iPhone5 and IOS6, my wife NEVER went over her plan.  Now, she can't get half way through the month without going over.  Phantom transfers of 10's of MBs every morning between 12-1a, when no one is using the phone and it should be connected to WiFi.

I was hoping AT&T/Apple fixed the issue with 6.0.1, but no change.

    Very frustrating!

  • Stiffler_PE Level 1 Level 1

Sincere appologies gents, got swept up in the moment lol. Will repost corectly.

  • Stiffler_PE Level 1 Level 1

Good question jimcamella... Does this problem occur with IOS 5 as well ?

I seem to recall people complaining after going from 5 to 6.

I am picking up a 4S on monday and i believe it has IO5 on. If that is the case i am inclined to leave it on 5 till this seems to resolve itself.

Either that or do as Mattsmithsa says and remove the podcast app.

What do you guys think.  Leave on 5 or go to 6.0.1

Just came back from the Apple Store genius.  "That's the way it is supposed to work" she says.  "Get a bigger data plan" she says.  The "Use Cellular data" switch only controls how a podcast STARTS to download.  If you lose your wi-fi connection after it has started or if you manually click to update or download a podcast, the "Use cellular data" switch set to OFF is ignored.  There is no way to prevent huge data overages on cellular data, she says.

Either the Genius doesn't know what she is talking about or the Podcasts App is (still) seriously flawed.  I've just deleted the Podcasts App and went back to syncing my podcasts manually to my computer.  That should fix it.  Looks like Scott Forstall's software folks have more problems than just the Maps App.

  • KAVE25 Level 1 Level 1

I don't even have the Podcast application installed and still have the problem.  This is a serious problem that needs to be addressed.  I refuse to pay more money to AT&T to resolve Apple's bug.  And turning on/off cellular is an extremely poor workaround.

Apple are you paying attention to this issue!?!?!?

  • Maerlin Level 1 Level 1

How are you listening to Podcasts then? The app not only syncs but plays them.

  • Norway91 Level 1 Level 1

    Holy Jesus of virgin Mary!

  • KAVE25 Level 1 Level 1

I don't listen to podcasts.  This thread is about excessive data usage of IOS6, which some believe is related to the Podcast application.  My experience shows the excessive data usage continues even with the Podcast application completely removed.
