Q: Ios6 causing excessive data usage?

Since downloading iOS 6 I'm having major issues with my cellular data usage going through the roof! I used 1.5g yesterday and that was after going into every available setting and turning them off! Ie location services/icloud and all others! The only setting which uses data I have left on was literally the cellular data setting! I don't know why this is happening as I've never had an issue before since owning the very first iPhone! Is anyone having the same problem or know a fix? Any help would be much appreciated!

Do you mean iOS 6.02?  Most of us are running that now.

Yes, experiencing data leakage, Apple and Version not much help.

    Curious...

We are on Verizon in US, how long does it take before you see data usage?

We have a delay of about 8 hours before data on our Verizon account, is this normal?

I have a 4S with 6.01 and 6.02 is not available to us.

I have started having data leak with 6.01.  Resetting network settins helped, but I think I am still leaking.

Podcast application is a strong suspect.

I don't use iTunes Match. Thanks Meature for the post on the last page. I will go down the settings info and check.

I do not think the verizon time stamps are accurate. No issues yet as of this morning.

I will say this. If you check cellular data usage on the iphone, it breaks it out into data sent and data receieved. The data leakage I was having was data sent.

My wife's phone had (last week)

    3.6 G sent and 125MB received

I am still waiting on Verizon to call me about the data leakage. I called on Dec 22 and still waiting.

There's normally a good few hours delay between usage and stats collection/reporting at the mobile provider.

I have found that it is icloud backing up. I only have 10 GB here and I realised that the ipod used 600 MB of upload overnight, this could only be icould because I only have 5 apps installed. got rid of icloud and it never happened again (It's been a month now). So just delete your icloud account by going to the icloud setting, scroll to the bottom and delete the account.

This is interesting.... I reset my Cellular Usage stats on my iPhone 5 (Settings -> General -> Usage -> Cellular Usage) on my billing date every montth (which was a couple of days ago).

My iPhone cellualr usage stats shows 4.6MB sent and 21.5 MB received (so 26.1) yet both the Datawiz app and my online provider's app (Bell) show around 73MB used so far this billing period.

I too was having terrible overages when I got my iPhone 5 in September.  Was using 4-5 times the amount I would normally have used on my iPhone 3Gs (that never had iOS6).

The excessive usage has slowed down in the past month but I can't pinpoint why.  I am still intrigued wht the iphone usage stats are so much lower than the app and my cell provider indicate.   Ihadn't really paid attention to it the last couple of months so don't know if this is a recent issue or not.

    Sara and Deadhead--

Usage is more on sent than received--not sure why.  I have no social media, no icould, no music etc.  Don't send email from phone.

Sara, yes my iphone usge stats are less than what the carrier shows. Not sure why.

Another question since I am new to smart phones...

Is using 5-10 meg of data a day that you can't really explain pretty normal?

I know it is not an enourmous amount of data.

In the 3 years I owned a 3GS the iPhone cellular data usage always closely matched what m cell carrier said I was using. I seem to recall it did match for the first month or two of owning my iphone 5 with iOS 6. I'll have to keep my eye on this.

    Deadhead,

    Gave your process a try.

On my phone erased everything and set up as completely new phone.

On wife's backed up to iclould, erased all content and settings, then restored via icloud.

Both phones also ereased cookies and data on Safari.

I have also significanly reduced location services and notifications.  Somebody I spoke with said definitely want to disable notifications on social media--facebook, twitter.

My wifer's phone had 7 meg is usage today which is not really explainable.

I'll let you know if I see any difference in usage with these changes.

The disconnect in data usage between what the iphone shows and carrier shows (Verizon) is pretty interesting, have no idea what to make of that.

Meature, let me know. We got our phones around Nov 6. It was not until Dec 15 that her phone went berserk.

    I don't think it's a hardware issue; it's a software issue.

For those just joining us, my wife's iphone 5 w/ ios 6.0.2 was leaking (sending) 50 to 200 MB a day in wi-fi and in standby mode with all apps closed.

We have icloud set up but the back-up is turned off. And "locate phone" is the only icloud setting turned on, everything else turned off.

Email accounts continuing to attempt mail retreival unsuccessfully is one possibility and has been reported by other users.  Another possibility is that the phone is dropping the wifi connection and switching to cellular unnoticed.  There are numerous wifi issues with iOS 6.  Try shutting off cellular when wifi is available and see if that helps.  Also, keep an eye on wifi while home.  See if the connection is maintained while the phone is awake, and also when charging and sleeping.

Here is a youtube vid of how the data leak happened for me (proof):

It took 2 months of argueing with Vodafone to get the charges reversed and they even helped me with a report on the URLS causing the most data traffic. This pinpointed the culprit app for me. However this app started ths misbehaviour only after IOS6 was updated to. (and IOS6.0.1) on my wife's iPhone 4S.

    I hope this helps someone.

i think it's the iphone 5 that is pulling more data than it should have.  i just went on flipboard to look at a couple news articles and i used 65mb in a couple minute. (i have lte turned off).

what i find weird is that my iphone 4 (i have iphone 5 now) never used this much data at once.  i was using 650mb max a month with my iphone 4 and now with very light use i'm at 800mb in 2 weeks or so.  i've been monitoring this and trying to stop the data use and when ever i use anything internet related the data shoots up.  i'll look at some text and it'll say i used 10mb for a 200kb file.  this is the issue i have found and cannot find a way around it or why it is happening.  it should be this way.  apple needs to know this and fix it soon.  people are getting screwed royal by this.
