Q: Ios6 causing excessive data usage?

Since downloading iOS 6 I'm having major issues with my cellular data usage going through the roof! I used 1.5g yesterday and that was after going into every available setting and turning them off! Ie location services/icloud and all others! The only setting which uses data I have left on was literally the cellular data setting! I don't know why this is happening as I've never had an issue before since owning the very first iPhone! Is anyone having the same problem or know a fix? Any help would be much appreciated!

Just purchased my iPhone 5 last week in Vancouver, Canada and have noticed obscenely high data usage. I usually use less than 500MB of data per month and in the first 2 days of having the iPhone 5 I went through 300MB of data. I spoke to my carrier at Bell Canada and they were not aware of the problem and recommended that I just turn off my cellular/data. Apple needs to fix this problem ASAP and the carrier, Bell Canada, needs to inform its customers of this problem.

I think the problem lies in the podcastApp.

Just delete it, restart iPhone and your podcast would be as normal as it was in de MusicApp.

    No more exsessive downloading...

I have the same problem after upgrading Iphone 3GS tot iOS6. I'm living in Belgium.

    - excessive data usage

    - delete podcast app -> no solution

    - restore iphone (still iOS 6 ) -> problem seems to be solved

    - problem started again after using mobile data instead of wifi

    - reset network settings -> no solution

    - changed e-mail push to pull -> no solution

    - removed all e-mail accounts -> no solution

    - removed all podcasts -> no solution

I hope Apple is investigating this.

I did find articles that it is not possible to go back to iOS5 on the internet.

If anyone things this is possible let me know, then I could try if this is a solution.

    Kind regards,

Found this on an Optus community forum (thanks Jay)

"Here is a possiblefix for wi-fi issues with IOS6:

    Go to:

Settings>Wi-Fi>("Your Network")> [the blue circle arrow icon]

Scroll to bottom of screen and set HTTP Proxy to Auto"

Same problem here in Canada with Rogers! Called them and they say their unaware of any problem and that I should

contact Apple. Apple refuses to admit that there's any issue and I should contact the carrier?!

I have the same program but the solution is to to turn off your 3G network, because when your iPhone or iPad or iPod touch have a bad wi-Fi signal it turn automatically on your 3G network....

And if you use Siri, that can be the problem to, because siri use a lot of data!

I didn't realize that putting the iPhone in its cradle on my radio/alarm clock at night , that it shut off my wifi and reverted to cellular data! Even when it's awake and on wifi the data is still leaking through. Short term solution turn off cellular when on wifi.

    Come on Apple?!

Just got of the phone with Apple support, and unfortuantely they can't do a thing.

I am in Canada and have been having 4X to 5X my typical data usage since upgrading to iOS6. Telus has been really good, they have refunded my excess data ($400-$500) for the last couple months, but they told me they can't do it any longer.

They had me take my phone in for service and they "cleaned it out" and reset it to factory, told me not to install any apps. Still the problem persists.

According to Apple it is an issue known to them, they are taking it seriously, and "working on it". But they can't help in any way at this point, and they have no idea when a resolution will occur. They also said they won't support anyone going backwards to an older iOS.

Telus has told me to switch to a blackberry (they will give me an older one) because that seems to be the only way to solve the problem. I would rather just have an iPhone that doesn't cost me $300 a month in overages!

I wouldn't hold my breathe for a resolution any time soon, they don't even have a plan in place to manage the problem at this point.

A Telus rep told me the new iPhone 5 uses way more data as it's a much "faster" phone.

ummmm.. ok.. obviously they don't really know what they are talking about.

I had to upgrade my data package because of all this higher than usual data usage.

The problem for me seemed to be the podcast app, now that I've deleted it and gone back to podcasts in iTunes the excessive data use has stopped. I also heard that iTunes match and iCloud sync cause the same problem, I don't use either of those so can't say for sure.

I upgraded my iPhone 4 to iOS6.  I don't use the podcats app, but I do use iCloud to sync contacts and calendars with my iMac.  I got a text from my service provider telling me I was about to breach my data limit, something I'm usually nowhere near.  I've just switched cellular data off, but there's no point having a smart phone that can only connect via wifi!  Apple need to fix this soon.

I am not sure on total usage yet .  But I did check my data usage 10 days into my billing cycle. 3gb used already on my ipad2 and iphone4s. I found out from Business Insider about the Advertising Tracker. You have to stop it, it tells advertisers where you are. (General - About - Advertising ) change default. Anyway I am turning off 3G at home. I have app DataMan running on both. Rogers says its an Apple problem - without data I cannot call Apple to find out its a Rogers problem. Rogers has delayed processing of people in my billing period though. Bill is 6 days late   - watch data on iOS6
