Mail notification (sound) will not change

I cannot seem to get the mail sound to change (on my iPhone5) from the sound I had on my 4s (backed up and reloaded through iCloud).

I have changed the sound in "settings" and regardless of that sound is chosen, the "News Flash" WILL.NOT.GO.AWAY

I even changed it to "None" and the "News Flash" sound still chimes.

Anyone have this issue?

iPhone 5, iOS 6

So in response to this I did some testing and wanted to let you all know that ToddM's post was correct that this will indeed fix the OP post about the issue, however there is a caveat to this in which i found that it works with this.

Mail notifications in general are contained by default in the Settings-Sounds-Mail changing here will change them if you have only one account. IF you have multiple changing here will not alter the settings as intended. This is how i found and successfully was able to change and validated that it's working. Brand New Iphone 5 OS 6.0.2 or whatever update is on it now. Sprint btw.

Settings -> Notifications -> Mail Accounts if you have more than one -> Like i have Exchange and iCloud. Click on either one scroll down, you will see New Mail Sound. Change this here and then test. I did this 4 x for each account with out changing the default one. I had the default set to Tweet, and then changed the other 2 under notifications to custom, none, and TriTones and alternated and its working perfectly.

Just some food for thought.

Thanks

After speaking with Apple support about this issue she had me try the obligatory reset of the phone. THIS WORKED AND SOLVED THE PROBLEM.

  • Settings
  • General
  • Reset
  • Reset All Settings

So I lost minor things that I had to reset to what I wanted (background, etc.). But not a big deal. You don't lose Apps, or content.

Worked for me, hopefully it works for you.

Ok so the first things that you would need to determine are as follows: This is the best way to get this to test and see if it works for you. First things first, set aside all the notes on configurations that you would need for 2 Accounts to configure with email. Prior to doing this, do the reset as listed above in the directions of this post's reply. Once you have it reset, then do the following steps:

  • 1. First , set the mail notification Sound by going to Settings > Sounds > Mail , and change this here to something other than default.
  • 2. Add your first email account first to the phone using the Mail Accounts and do New. Once you have added the new account, just this first one, send a mail message to it from a PC/MAC and test to see if the sound is working other than the default meaning the sound you changed it to.
  • 3. Once you have conifrmed that it's working this way, next you will need to do, is add the 2nd account to the phone, and test that you can get mail on it.
  • 4. Now that you have both accoutns, you can go into Settings>Notifications>Mail>and you will see both accounts listed there . For me it's : Exchange, LiveMail, Icloud in that order. All of these are clickable with touch.
  • 5 Touch one of them it will open the menu to allow you to change notifications including sounds.

CHANGE all 3 accounts sounds using step 4 listed and then after you have done this for each of them accounts, test by sending emails to them.

Let me know if you need help.

Thanks.

Yes, I am having the exact same issue. I want to change my notification sound when I get email to the old school AOL "You've Got Mail". I d/l the ringtone, went into notifications, went to email and change the sound to my custom "you've got mail" sound, and it still plays the defualt sound. I also went into sound settings, chose email and also changed that to the custom tone and it still plays the defualt no matter what. I hope they fix this soon :/.

I am also on an iPhone 5 w/ iOS6

This solved my problem - the same one originally raised!

Untypically, advice from the Genius Bar failed to think of this solution. I got the "reload the operating system recommendation" and then restore my apps, etc. Didn't work.

Same problem here. this is what finally worked for me...

- Settings

- Notification center

- under do not include (that is where my mail sat)

Mail

- Alert sound

- change to desired sound

Although I changed it originally under settings/sound/ New Mail, it didn't change. Not until I went in and did above in addition to the change in sounds. IN fact, I changed the sounds to something else and it held the changed sound as if I didn't change it...confused? me too.. ok, I had telegraph on sometime back. I changed that to glass through the settings/sounds section. it didn't change. I went into the settings/notification center... and changed it to glass. it changed the tone to glass. However, when I went back into settings/sounds, it still was on Keys (something I had fiddled around with during all the back and forth trying to change it.

So to me, it doesn't matter what you do in sounds...its matter what you change in the Notification center. BTW, I have an Iphone 5s, OS version 7.1.2

hope this helps.
