Q: Can I use airport express to extend a non-Apple wireless system?

I've a D-Link wirelessn router.  I'd like to use an Airport Express to extend its reach within a multi story house.  Instructions on Apple's site refer only to linking the Airport Express to an Airport Base Station or Time Machine.  Can I use the Airport Express with wireless routers that are not Apple brand?

The Airport Express is designed to interface in wireless mode with other Apple wireless products (Extreme, Time Capsule, other Express units)  However, the Express would work if it was hard wired to your router via ethernet cable, for example.  Not very practical for your application.
