MacBook stopped working, how do I get my hard drive transferred?

My late 2008 white MacBook stopped working this weekend. It won't turn on, no sound start up, Zero. I ordered a refurbished MacBook Pro this morning so that's on its way to me. But all of my stuff is on my MacBook. Can I still do a transfer to an external hard drive even if it won't turn on? What do I do if I can? Please help!

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hello,

If the MacBook is not powering on then you don't have much chance in getting data off it.

You best option is to remove the hard drive and place that into an external USB caddy.

This will turn your old hard drive into an external drive. Then you can transfer any files by plugging it into your new refurbished MacBook Pro.

A caddy can be brought from places like Amazon or a computer retailer.

Make sure it's for the 2.5 laptop hard drive.

Hope this helps

Pull the drive out of the old MacBook and put it in an external case.

Here are instructions on replacing the hard drive in a MacBook with a removable battery. http://creativemac.digitalmedianet.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=45088

Here's a cheap SATA external hard drive case on Amazon http://www.amazon.com/Vantec-NexStar-2-5-Inch-External-Enclosure/dp/B002JQNXZC/r ef=pd_cp_pc_0

If you don’t have the tools to open up the MacBook OWC has a set for $5
