The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

I just turned on Wifi on my 3GS for 1 minute and my Data monitor APP shows total sent/received about 25MB. 25MB in 1 minute?

so I turned it OFF. Tonight, when AT&T compiles Data usage and check if it shows up on my account. That would confirm it.

Off my 9GB usage, DataMonitor App shows 6GB over Wifi and 2 GB or so over AT&T cellular network but AT&T reports the entire 9GB usage on my account and charged me $10 per GB excess over 3GB.

Who's to blame here? No idea.

If anyone is experiencing this with Verizon, please let us know. It seems like it is limited to AT&T.

I am experiencing this data leakage problem with my Verizon iPhone. I hoped the Verizon carrier update 13.1 would fix it, but it didn't. I now have Verizon 13.3 and iOS 6.0.1 and I'm still experiencing major data leakages. My previous iPhone was with AT&T and I never exceeded my 200MB monthly allowance and now I struggle to stay below 1GB/mo. Something is not right.

Exactly the same. Prior AT&T user. NEVER went over 1 GB in the 5 yrs I was with them. Now if I do not turn Cellular Data off when on WiFi I will go over the 2 GB plan with Verizon.

This started with the OS6 update on my iPhone 4 while with AT&T. I thought Apple and the Cellular providers would have gotten this corrected by now.

Galaxy not having this problem. This will eventually hurt Apple if not corrected soon. As I said before, IBM lost track of their customer base in the 80's. Who would have thought IBM would suffer, yet they did.

For those that are new to the thread, I had this issue on Verizon. After speaking with Apple technical support, they recommended I do a factory reset and restore. I was skeptical, but I tried it, and it solved my problem. I haven't had the issue since. May not fix for everybody but its an easy thing to try, all it costs is time.

Both my wife and I are seeing cellular data usage when we are on a wifi network on our iPhone 4 with iOS 5 and AT&T service. Nothing about our use of our iPhones has changed recently. I added the My Data Manager app to monitor my data usage and it clearly shows Mobile (cellular) data usage even when I'm connected to my normal home wifi. It seems to be worse on my wife's phone than mine, but it's happening on both. So this is not just a iPhone 5 problem or an iOS 4 problem. Since my wife's data usage went way over her limit (and higher than it has ever been by a long shot), I'll have to call AT&T and try to get the extra charges removed.

i am having the same issue i have to always turn off cellular when i am home using my wifi. i spoke to att and they told me that to speak with apple and see what they say. i hope apple realy fix this issue because its annoying that i have to do this every time i am on wifi

It looks like Apple knows about the problem but apparently it suppose to be fixed with 6.01. The bug seems to match up with what many of this thread's posters have discovered, which is that the Podcast App was downloading massive amounts of data from LTE.

It seems that 6.01 hasn't completely fixed everyone's data leakage? I guess we'll have to wait for 6.1.

I started having this problem in the last week or so (at least, I started noticing it this last week). iPhone 5, ios 6.01, through AT&T. I received a data usage warning from AT&T, which is strange because my billing cycle just started 7 days ago. I rarely go above my 200mb limit each month, so it was surprising that I had already used so much in so little time. I'm currently unemployed, so I spend a lot more time at home now -- connected to the wifi as far as I can tell. (TrendNet 54Mbps 11g Wireles Router, TEW-432brp) I viewed my data usage on the AT&T site, and most of the data usage happened when I was at home. I've had to turn off data usage just to stop the bleeding, but clearly this isn't an acceptable solution.

I noticed that when I have cellular data turned on, in Settings -> General -> Usage, every time I click on Cellular Usage, the Sent bytes goes up by 1k. (even when I'm on my wifi) So I can go back and forth between the Cellular Usage screen and the Usage screen, and watch that number tick up... Not sure if it's actually sending data, or if it's just an error with the calculation of cellular usage, but it's kind of scary...

Just activated a new iPhone 5 on AT&T, iOS 6.0.1, it's about 3 feet from the WAP and consuming cellular data at approx 150KB/hr, with LTE turned off, ie about 120MB/mth, 10% of the plan allowance. You can see the wifi flick on each time you open the phone, so it's obviously just using cell data whilst it's sleeping. 13 days till this gets fixed or back it goes.

I agree. I have an iPhone 4 and my husband has an iPhone 4S and use AT&T. We have both gotten notifications that our data usage is high. I got a notification 11 days after my data reset. I'm a stay-at-home, homeschooling mom, so I am home most of the time and I don't stream music from the internet on my phone. When my phone goes to sleep the only reason I should get a data package is if someone calls me or sends me a message, and that should be miniscule in comparison to the data our log shows we have used. We have both turned our celluar data off to keep from incurring overage charges. APPLE! PLEASE FIX THIS FOR IPHONE 4 CUSTOMERS AND BEYOND ON OTHER NETWORKS! Thanks!

Monday, November 12, 1:40 p.m. – I reactivated my iPhone4 through Verizon (13.0) and updated the operating system to 6.0.1. I plugged into my computer and connected to wifi, leaving the phone on all afternoon and allowing it to go to sleep after 5 minutes. I'm watching the data usage like a hawk; Apple will be monitoring the usage too. I use FaceBook and Hotmail regularly and connect to wifi only at my office, turning it off before my commute; I don't have wifi at home. I use my desktop Macintosh and not my iPhone to download music or video; for me the iPhone is a tool and not entertainment.

Tuesday – I’m tracking my data usage at the beginning of each day when I plug into my computer and connect to WiFi – 7.0mb sent/38.3mb received. iPhone left on all night on battery power.

Wednesday – 7.2mb sent/38.7mb received; only a tiny amount of cellular data was used since yesterday morning. I’ve disconnected from iCloud because I really don’t want my info, however small it is, to be out in the ozone; I’ll back up to my office Mac. I don't yet "push" email or Facebook; I'll turn that on in a week.

Thursday – 7.7/40.2 – no changes/additions until next Monday.

Friday – 7.9/40.7 – Updated the FaceBook app and the WiFi download created no cellular usage.

So far, so good but I can speak only for my iPhone4 and the iOS 6.0.1 update and Verizon.

I am having the same problem as well with my new iPhone 5. I have noticed recently that even though I am continuously in wifi mode, whether at home or at work, when my screen goes to sleep my phone switches to LTE everytime. So when I go to unlock my screen the mode quickly converts out of LTE and into wifi. I assume this is why I have racked up so much data usage in a relatively short time since I have received this new phone. I hope apple can fix this problem soon!
