Q: The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

The first two days after I received my iPhone 5, I racked up 400MB of Cellular Data.  99% of the time I was using my phone, I was connected over WiFi.  So I ran a test on my own by watching a YouTube video over WiFi and then looking at my Cellular Data under the Usage menu.  Sure enough, it had went up by around 10MB.  I called into Apple Support and asked them what was going on.  They thought that it might have been a problem with my phone or my house's WiFi connection.  After them walking me through a series of test and restores, the lady semi-acknowledged that it could be a problem with how their phone interacts with the new LTE network.

If you guys out there could keep an eye on your Cellular Usage Data, that would be great.  Maybe it's a problem with my iPhone 5, or maybe it's a much larger problem.  Seeing as I used to have unlimited data with Verizon, being charged with everything above 2GB would be very costly for me...especially when it's not even my fault.

Hopefully we can get this issue sorted out.

Here's how to enter the Cellular Usage menu:  Settings->General->Usage->Cellular Usage

There is a button at the top right of this page that says "Following". Click it and it will change to "Follow". Then you will get no further emails on this thread and will not be bothered with Lawrence's truthful and knowledgeable posts. Are you having your problem with AT&T?

Germany T-mobile. This topic is not just for USA and AT&T, the questions/ answers should be general, I don't understand your frustration, are you Apple lawyer? If you don't have the problem it does not mean that all the iphones on the earth works as yours. You try to prove as that we don't have this problem - I think you should comment on newspaper if you want to be listen by somebody.

Not an Apple lawyer. It is a carrier issue, Verizon had to release a carrier update to deal with a major problem they had with it and Lawrence is dealing with someone who is with AT&T. I'm with AT&T and have not had the problem and millions and millions of people have not had the problem. You were the one who said you tired of reading Lawrence I gave you a way to avoid it.

    Lawrence,

Hmmmm... that makes sense. I think I may have been running the wrong rabbit... or maybe (probably?) there are several issues. I will try to get the user to do the before and after accumulated data.

Assuming your prediction will be correct (the high usage is not at 4am, just the reporting), what should be the next step?

I am a retired software guy...so this is when I ask: "How can I get a profile of non-overlapping entities' (apps, OS tasks, etc) of cellular data usage?" of rolled-up usage in realtime or recorded? Even if it is raw and unsorted (as long as it's ascii :-)

I have heard of a couple of apps Data Manager Pro and Onavo. Are thereother system utilitiy apps that might be helpful?

    -Tnx

I'm a semi-retired software guy also. The first step is to see how much data are used overnight, as I described. I suspect it is very little. You can also get a breakdown of which apps are using cellular data in a different screen; Settings/General/Usage.

If you want to see it the user can take screen shots of both screens. Just press and release both buttons at the same time. The images can then be emailed to you from the Photos App camera roll folder.

I managed to fix mine by turning off mobile data for all apps, then forget my wifi network. Test an app to make sure it can't connect to the internet. Then reconnect to your wifi, then allow the apps to use mobile data (in that order). I have since found that the wifi is always favoured over the mobile data...

Not sure if this will work for anyone else?

    Hello All,

I know this may be a little late on this... I have an iPhone 6 on iOS 8 and found this link: http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/how-to/ios-8-high-data-usage-iphone-fixes/

Even though it's a Canadian link I found it to be very helpful and my data drains went down!

That is not a solution, it is a workaround that you posted.

i do not understand why apple won't listen to people posting here for years on end and give a way to toggle a switch, that just says "don't use data when you shouldn't".

how can we really get apple's engineering SVP to listen to this?

The switch is built in to do exactly that and for the vast majority of people it works. For those that it doesn't it takes time to track down why it is not working.
