Q: The iPhone 5 uses Cellular Data over WiFi?

The first two days after I received my iPhone 5, I racked up 400MB of Cellular Data.  99% of the time I was using my phone, I was connected over WiFi.  So I ran a test on my own by watching a YouTube video over WiFi and then looking at my Cellular Data under the Usage menu.  Sure enough, it had went up by around 10MB.  I called into Apple Support and asked them what was going on.  They thought that it might have been a problem with my phone or my house's WiFi connection.  After them walking me through a series of test and restores, the lady semi-acknowledged that it could be a problem with how their phone interacts with the new LTE network.

If you guys out there could keep an eye on your Cellular Usage Data, that would be great.  Maybe it's a problem with my iPhone 5, or maybe it's a much larger problem.  Seeing as I used to have unlimited data with Verizon, being charged with everything above 2GB would be very costly for me...especially when it's not even my fault.

Hopefully we can get this issue sorted out.

Here's how to enter the Cellular Usage menu:  Settings->General->Usage->Cellular Usage

Holy crap.  Just got off the phone with AT&T and they told me they would monitor my account the rep on the phone told me he would be doing an official report and monitoring it personally and calling me back in a week or so.   He also told me he would take care of all overage charges.   Now that I am working towards 9 gigs in 13 days.    The customer service reps name is Allan Quilatan.  I'm calling from St. Louis but have a San Diego 619 area code.   If you guys want I think you should call and ask to speak with this guy or refer you problem to mine.    I think we all just need to blow up AT&T s customer support.   Maybe we can get the unlimited data plan back.   **** version and sprint have them.   Why can AT&T get it back.

I am having the same issue with watching Youtube on Wifi.  It is draining all my data.  Why can Apple put in a fix like they did for the Verizon.  This is getting annoying since now I have pay for the overage and also not able to use my data.   I am afraid to go over my limit again and have to pay tripple this month.

Called into Telstra, Subiaco [Western Australia] this morning...

Senior Technician told me they were very much aware of the LTE overide of WiFi when at Home or Office network.

And he confirmed Apple was working with telstra and other Australian Telco's to provide an Update to iOS 6 to address the issue.

    So...

A little patience is in order: a fix is on the way?

In the mean time, use Telstra 24x7 App [for iPad and iPhone] to monitor.

And Telstra Mobile Data Usage web app for detail  https://es.telstra.com/MobileDataUsageMeter/index.jsp

I'm having the same problem on my iPad. It happens when I use certain applications, like NFL rewind. It started about two weeks ago and I don't know what's going on.

I have AT&T data plan on an iPad 3 running 5.1, and have the same issue, and it started when iPhone 5s came out. Crazy!

I am having the same problem. I called AT&T yesterday because I am 10 days into my data plan and almost 75% through my 2GB allowance. Turning off cellular data seems to mean I can't get texts, which is not an option. I have an iPhone 4S and the data suck started when I upgraded to iOS 6, so it is not a hardware issue in my case.

On a recommendation from another thread, I am downloading DataWiz so I can see if I am using data when connected to wifi. I am really hoping Apple patches this before I am out of data.

Over wifi, doing seemingly nothing (double-pushing button to switch apps) I used 7.82 MB in a few seconds. Something is fishy.

Jenniwon, you will get your text messages without cell data. You cannot get pictures in your text messages and you cannot get apple's iMessages. If someone sends you a picture message, it should queue up and be delivered when you enable cell data. At least that was our experience.

I realized this after I posted, but it is still not an ideal workaround. I would feel better if I knew Apple was working on a fix, and better yet if they were working with carriers so that people like me won't get hit with overages because of this bug (or unannounced feature).

Agreed! I did it for a few days, felt like I was paying a whole lot for a dead phone. That is why we returned our new phones and got droids. I realize everyone can't do that...

It's iOS6 rather than iPhone5 it seems, I've been whacked with the same problem on O2 in the UK and I'm not using iPhone 5, this plus the malfunctioning podcast app means some serious charges for data this month. Thanks Apple, you're doing great.

Appear to have the same issue here in the UK on O2, but when i called they told me there was no known fault, but confirmed since i upgraded to IOS6 on my 4S, i've used all my data allowance in three days 1GB two months runnning,

    Same apps "more or less"

In over 4 years of owning iphones and being with the same provider i've only ever once reached my data limit.

I'm a podcast user, have tried uninstalling and re installing the app, "As advsed on other sites and threads"

So far "1 hour in" mobile data usage appears low and normal. i will monitor and feed back any info provided by o2 or my reinstall.

Would be intrested to know if other all people having this issue have the popcast app installed. as I've recieved feed back from friend with the same device and network but without the popcast app. and he has not experanced the issue.

Is this really to save battery power (at the expense of data plan)?  I heard some Verizon fixes still draining data plan.  If this is deeply integrated in the operating system, I have a very bad feeling that it won't be an easy fix.

I have 2 iPhone 5's and an iPad running iOS 6 with AT&T and have not seen this issue at all.  I have been checking on the data useage since hearing this is happening to some.  I am in a market that doesn't have LTE yet so maybe this is the reason? Also don't use the Apple Podcast app.  Maybe issue only happens with LTE and/or the Podcast app, I have all cellular data options enabled for iCloud, location services, etc and my data useage is unchanged since upgrading.  So for what it's worth the issue doesn't happen on all iOS 6 devices.

Well that is good news for you. Maybe you have a rock solid wifi connection at home and at work. Maybe your restore from backup didn't corrupt something deep inside IOS 6. Nobody knows. But for some of us, this issue is real, constant and a real constant pain in the gorilla glass.
