Not Soundhound..I meant Slacker. It's an app like Pandora.

    Just to be clear.

    Well here's a solution

AT&T rolls out monstrous 30GB, 40GB, and 50GB shared data tiers starting at $300 monthly

  • J. Christopher Edwards Level 2 Level 2

That is NOT the only problem here. for years I have only ised between 2-4GB of Data per month.

After iOS 6.2.1, I have usd 11GB  in 19 days.

This is not just a "poorly chosen plan"

  • J. Christopher Edwards Level 2 Level 2

Why would I buy an iPHone and have to "work around" this issue by turning Cellular Data on and off, on and off, on and off during the course of the day.

You don't buy a high end stove and only use the front right burner when the oven is on and the back two burners when the oven is set to broil and the front left burner and the right rear burner, but only when the right rear is on Medium heat?

You expect it item to work like it is designed to.

So, after months of dealing with ATT and Apple:  Nothing.  Apple Executive Offices blames "third party apps", in my 19-yr old daughter's case, Instagram and Snapchat.  They completely ignore the fact that she had used these apps BEFORE iOS6 upgrade with NO OVERAGES.  Now every month, there are overages.  Massive amounts of "internet/Media Net-SENT" throughout the day and around midnight.

    Not their problem.

I am so fed up.  Apple is not the company it used to be.

    Sprint?  Samsung?  Any suggestions?

    keep complaining to the FCC...

There's something deeply wrong here - and it may have to do with a larger AT&T / Apple issue.  If you look at how Apple and Verizon solved this exact same issue,  it's night and day.

iPhone 5 Data: Apple, Verizon Issue Fix For Bug Causing Huge Data Overages

But in this case,  AT&T clearly says it's an Apple software bug,  and Apple seems to want to blaim customers with a raft of insane accusations about our crazy mis-use of data.

What they know is that the volume of data being used simply CAN'T be a customer problem. Heck, AT&T doesn't even offer a data plan for consumers larger than 5gigs a month.  In my case -the largest use I've ever had since my first iPhone was 1.8gig.   Now with every attempt to stay in WiFi and shut off cellular - I'm already at 6.8 gigs,  with 14 more days in my month.

I'm not sure why this hasn't broken into tech media. That would be the only thing that Apple might care about - bad press.

I have a 6 GB plan with AT&T. I have not had runaway data usage...well except for today but I have the March Madness app and couldn't be home today.

  • StevenRnyc Level 1 Level 1

So,  has anyone updated it IOS 6 6.1.3 and seen a change in data use on the iPhone 5?

Apple doesn't report this as a patch for AT&T - but my initial data today is dramatically lower than yesturday... Yesturday 499 MB,  today (after update) 56 MB.

Also,  My Data Mgr reports usage in small bites across the day (that looks more like my usage) wherease for the past six months it's been HUGE spikes that don't reflect usage.

Anyway - would love to hear other folks experiences.

    Thanks all -

I have a 4S running 6.1.2 and have recently been hit with this "iPhone uses data like nobody's biz" epidemic. I posted earlier in another discussion. Sorry it's a bit long.

"But I know the iphone is uploading a BUNCH of data when it doesn't need to.

I also deleted my mail, icloud, anything I could think of that fetches data and such. Still using data. You can check this by having your iphone on your wifi. Turn off your 3G. Go to your computer and open up cmd and type ping -t.

This will have your computer ping google over and over.  Experiment and see what pings you are seeing.  If you have decent internet you will see anything from 10ms to 50ms or a bit more.  Anything more than that can get pretty slow.  Now if you put your iphone on wifi for a little bit those numbers will skyrocket after a bit.  I personally don't have high upload speed so I see this as a huge issue.  My ping will skyrocket to 500+ ping and it will cease the SECOND I turn off wifi for my phone."

So I am trying to last resort things to see if it fixes it and I will post it if it does.  I plan to back up 6.1.2 and restore to 6.1.3 and see if that fixes it. Maybe try and use the backup to go to 6.1.2 (no idea if that works). But my phone is barely usable in this state so there isn't much else I can do.

  • JunGull Level 1 Level 1

Update. I upgraded my phone to 6.1.3 and set it up as a new phone and planned to try and restore a backup to 6.1.2. THIS DOES NOT WORK. Any attempt to back up to any version of iOS will result in the phone just taking what it can from your back up and throwing it on iOS 6.1.3.

However, from what I can see this DID fix my data leakage problem. As much as I hate 6.1.3 because I can't "do that thing that 6.1.2 allowed us to do" I could not use my phone at all without worrying about data leakage.

So I hope this helps someone and to those who are still on 6.1.2 KEEP AN EYE ON YOUR DATA. It happened to me about 2 weeks after I upgraded to 6.1.2. I will watch these discussions for a few more days so feel free to ask questions.

I'm on verizon with ip5 and when I unlock my phone at my house, it switches from lte to wifi.

@StevenRnyc: After reading your post, I updated to 6.1.3 on Saturday night, giddy with excitement. Unfortunately, my first bit of data is not encouraging. My specific problem is that my iPhone 5 sends/receives about 20 MB of cellular data every day, no matter what I do, meaning my usage is 600 MB/month if I don't use the phone for anything but email and phone messages. I have every service disabled and all apps shut down. I had my data usage shut off over the weekend, and turned it on Sunday night. When I checked Monday morning, the ATT records show the moment I turned on my cellular data there was a 20.8 MB data transfer. So, nothing has changed for me. This may not seem like alot to some folks, but my data usage used to be 200-400 MB month, and now it is 1.6 GB, even with watching my usage like a hawk and disabling everything (which is well above and beyond any steps a non-anally retentive average consumer would take). I'll keep updating as I get more data.

Have iPhone5, 6.1.3. Have had these problems on and off, very annoying, thought I had it fixed, but some other source of cellular data use pops up. At 2am while I was sleeping, my phone charging, wi-fi on, all apps off, SIRI decides to send 60MB of data over cellular(looked at cellular data usage and found out it was SIRI). Now my cellular data will be turned off until my plan gets to next months usage. Lucky I have wifi at work and home, but doesn't help when I'm not at these two places. Guess I could turn cellular off every night, but I didn't buy an iPhone to have to fool around with it so it doesn't use cellular data that I have nothing to do with and running up my bill.

Turn Siri off.  If that's the problem, then it should fix it.
