Since the iPhone 5 on Verizon is unlocked, can I buy a pre-paid sim from one of the European carriers like Vodafone while vacationing there?

I'm traveling to England, France and Italy the 2nd week of October, and would like to be able to use my phone while I'm over there. I've read on a few blogs that since the Verizon iPhone 5 is unlocked, I should be able to do this. Some have stated that I can pretty much walk into any phone store that carries the iPhone 5 and buy a pre-paid nano sim and be able to use my phone.

If this is true, which carrier would be the best to go with. I'll only be in each country for 2 or 3 days, so if possible, I'd like to find one that I can use in all 3 countries instead of having to buy one in each destination. I'm mostly concerned with being able to make phone calls, but it would be great if I could send text messages, and use data for maps to get around the cities.

Does anybody have any knowledge on the best way to do this?

Contact Verizon Global support before you go to verify that your phone is actually unlocked. 800-711-8300.

Verizon has apparently made a public statement that, yes the phones are unlocked and no, they don't plan on mesing with that. So, you should be good to go if you can just find a nano sim.

Have a great trip!
