iPhone 5 bad call voice quality

Got the new iPhone 5 and have bad phone call quality. The recipient of the call seems to be able to hear me ok, but their voice either isn't there or drops out or sounds grainy like when you have bad cell reception. Many times, the calls have just not connected. I know that that my cell reception and the recipients cell reception were excellent. This has occured when calling other cell phones, land lines, and toll free numbers. Anyone else having this issue? Have an appointment at Apple tomorrow morning to see what they think.

I started to think that we was on to something and then I pulled the info from mine and all went "BLAH" LOL!!. We just have to keep on trying. And agree, this is very frustrating. I have spent over an hour a day everytime I call AT&T or Apple. And everytime, I ask them to pull up the case details and it seems like the previous rep doesn't put in all we discussed so have to keep going over and over all details on every call 😟. When I was with Verizon, I never had this problem and they always worked hard to recolve issue. I guess the same ethics don't apply to other cell phone companies and manufactures 😟.

Well this might be the end to my iPhone journey 😟. Maybe it's time to give the Droids another chance.

Since we're hitting a few dead ends with regards to resolution...I'll throw something out there just for the **** of it...

Does anyone notice the compression (robotic, digitized artifacts) issue happening more at certain times of day? The theoretical logic is that the providers (ATT, Verizon) compress the call transmissions more when there is more of their bandwidth being used...this causing more of the robotic effect

Just a thought...

The reason I think we're having finding a solution (besides the fact that it could still be a hardware screwup by Apple) is that we're all suffering from a combination of issues;

mic switching (between the three mics)

drop outs/cut outs (which could be from noisegating, compression or both)

compression (robotic, digitized sound)

reception (dropped calls)

Wow, what a mess...but it's time for some crazy ideas to try and fix this...

BTW, what app/process are you guys using to check phone info?

Having watch this thread for many weeks now, and posting occaisionally, what is emerging to me is that the most plausible source of the poor call quality - robotic voice with drop outs, especially at lower volumes from the source - is the voice handling software. My understanding is that in prior iphones there was a third party provider of this software named Audience. However, in the iphone5, Apple decided to go in house and create their own software to handle voice. My feeling is that this is just like the more publicized epic fail of Apple Maps, except this is not getting the same level of press attention. I would gess this will get progressively better with further iterations of the OS, or OS updates. Or, if Apple buys Audience. Otherwise I think we are stuck with it. 😟 I will be trading this iphone5 in for a Droid as soon as I figure out the logistics and run some numbers to make sure that between a ebay sale and a purchase of new phone without a new contract (since I just signed a new contract to get the iphone5) I will not be losing too much money. Bye iphone and your poor voice quality.

Jan 12, 2013 9:20 PM in response to dysphonix

My main issues are the robotic, digitized sound and voice droppping. I don't get too many dropped calls though and now that you mention the time issue, I noticed that most of my complaints I've made to AT&T are usually in the evening after 6PM (MST).

dysphonix, this was a good idea and worth looking into. Let's see what others say?

Come one everyone, let's do Apples job and let's see if we can figure this out 🙂
