I can.t hear the person on the other end of the call and they can't hear me unless I turn on the speaker. Is this a setting problem, carrier problem or a bad phone?

I am using Mobilink Carrier in Karachi-Paistan on a newly procured iPhone 5 with 64GB. Earlier, I was using iPhone 4 but there was no such problem. However, I will contact my carrier for the issue and/or may shift from current Service Provider to another Service Problem most probably Ufone Pakistan.

Can someone help me in this issue?

As the reporter ( who began this thread, here's what I have learned from a very reliable inside industry source regarding call quality using a Bluetooth headset,

Apple engineers never adequately tested their new iPhone 5 with Bluetooth headsets, and Bluetooth headsets from a number of companies perform poorly, experiencing dropout, robotic sounding conversations and other anomalies.  A software upgrade to the headsets will make a big improvement, but Apple engineers are still working on further improvements to the phone itself, that likely will result in a software fix. I’m told this is a consequence of Apple’s ultra-high secrecy that prevents their phones from being more widely tested before being released. So this refers just to headphone use. When others post their problems, specify if you are using the phone directly or through a BT headset.

Phone directly , no problems with wired headset or speaker phone. Also no problems connecting via Bluetooth in my car. Problem only lies when using the physical phone itself.

whoever has this problem with bad call quality in whatever form actual phone, bluetooth , speaker please understand this

Go to the nearest apple store or contact the carrier and insist on a replacement. Please insist on this

I did and got a new phone and have zero problems with the new unit.

If you get a bad replacement please go and replace it AGAIN until your problem is solved.

We are a very very few of us with this problem.

I have the same problem in Belgium.. the caller sounds like a robot. It happens 30 percent of the times, and if I call back it works fine.. So far it was only when receiving a call.

What a mess Apple. Take your responsibilities and reply to this thread.

Same problem here, also in Belgium.

I called Apple and will receive a new one. Fingers crossed!

  • R_odec Level 1 Level 1

    Same in Belgium with Base.

Strange thing is that it only happens when I'm home and with incomming calls.

If I call back everything is ok.

Called Apple yesterday, they asked me 3 steps to do before they can say that it is a hardware problem.

If step 1 is not ok you have to go to step 2 and so till 3

1 Push on/off button + home button for 5 sec., iphone reboots

    2 factory default reset

    3 new sim

i started with 1 and waiting now, so far everything is ok and my battery life time is also better, my signal for BASE is also better, strange but for the moment it helpd, hope is stays...

Will let you know if it's still ok in a week or so...

I had the same problem, what worked for me was deleting everything (data & settings) from the phone and setting up the phone as a new phone.

The only thing I used icloud for was setting back my contacts.

It's been a couple of day's now and it seems that it works ok now. Just my battery seems to go down a little bit faster as before but still able to get thru the day without problems.

Should there be a turn for the worst I will post it here.

Hope that this can help somebody

iPhone 5 Verizon.  Both original phone and replacement from Apple having the same sound quality issue.  Robotic/tinny at best; unintelligible/garbled at worst.  Until recently had an iPhone 4s that worked beautifully with the same numbers in the exact same locations. Have had to abandon many calls for unintelligibility.

    LTE is turned off.

Verizon says they can't replace an upgraded phone (iPhone 5) with an older phone (IPhone 4s).  Waiting to hear form Apple.  Feel like I'm inbetween a rock and a hard place (Apple and Verizon) with a phone that doesn't work.

I too have been suffering intermittent poor speech quality and lots of droopped calls on handsfree. After 4 calls to my carrier (Vodafone) they now acknowledge that this is a hardware issue and will be relacing the handset tomorrow. Fingers crossed I don't get another lemon.

As others have said, don't be fobbed off - insist on a replacement as this just isn't good enough.

Just left my iPhone 5 at mobistar (supplier in Belgium) today. They are going to send it to Apple and hopefully fix the problem of bad voice quality, there is also a possibility I'm getting a new one.

Problem now is, I don't have a sim to put in a normal phone, because nano sim is just for IPhone 5. Tried a special holder but it's not working.

So conclussion is 10 days no phone or pay for changing the sim.

Thanks Apple for the great service!

  • Nicolasbck Level 1 Level 1

Mine seems to be working now, so far. Didn't make a lot of calls but voice quality was ok...

I just removed the SIM, cleaned it a bit an re-inserted. Most people who got a new iPhone also did this.. so the problem might be somewhere with the SIM/insert SIM box.

Seems like this is a sensitive problem and might show up at anytime, on any iPhone 5.

Samething happen to me. I completely removed plastic screen protectors that came with iPhone 5 out of box, problem solved. I thought I could use them as screen saver like I had with iPhone 3gs, ( no problem with 3gs) "sandwitched" between OtterBox, but failed for iPhone 5. I have the 5 installed in Otterbox with no screen saver, no problem with voice quality.
