We all hope since months, this issue will be fixed "soon" %-)

It all will work as soon as the iPhone 5S (or whatever) will be released.

I have the same problem. I'm feeling like in a plane while talking. After a long talking I have a headache. I hope this critical bug gets fixed soon.

I thought that Apple might fix the problem in the latest iOS update, but obviously nothing changed.

I'm still having the same annoying problem, can't use my iPhone 5 for calls.

I even tried switching off wifi but that doesn't help at all.

    An update:

I am on my fourth iP5 (I have had several issues in addition to bad sound; new phone w. broken glass, broken volume button).

It seems now that the fourth phone have very good sound! I have described the symptoms as: 1) low sound being cancelled (overly active noice cancellation?), 2) muffled sound and 3) choppy/static sound. I only experience 3) occasionally, but seldom, now.

I do not know if it was hardware or software related. I only know that now I got a phone with good to excellent sound. Finally.

Only downside is that the up voulume button lowers the sound instead of increasing it when pushed at the side... Oh well, no product is perfect.

Same here. I am on my third iPhone 5 at the moment and the call quality finally appears to be really good (I've been using it for couple of days now). Had a muffed and static sound on both of mine previous iPhone 5s. Same country, same service provider (Three, Ireland).  Not sure if it was software or hardware issue. Good luck to those of you who are still expiriencing the issue.

I should follow-up. I took mine back to Verizon. One listen, and it was obivous to the Verizon rep that the earpiece was defective. He swapped me a new phone because I was under the 14-day deadline. All is good now.

If you have a brand new IPhone 5, the problem is with the plastic screen protector covering the speaker and the microphone on top of the phone. It interferes with the voice quality. Peel it off and your problem is solved.

    @ Chirpboy,

Seriously??? I think that this issue is way past some "plastic" covering the mic!!!! Reason I say this is because I did peel the plastic off the screen of the past three iPhone 5's that have already been replaced because of this issue.

this is more like a problem with your cellular provider if you replace the phone once and still facing the problem you should visit your cellular provider i hope that will help because a friend of mine faced the same problem once and solved it by visiting the cellular provider.

Have you read the thread fully, everyone has taken their devices to their provider and they of course, point the finger at Apple. Then you go to Apple, they then point the finger at the service provider. People probably wouldn't be so angry if Apple just admitted that this iPhone 5 is crap and they messed up making it. I've reverted back to the iPhone 4S and have not had the issue as with the iPhone 5 and with the same "provider".

As far as i know my iPhone 5 don't have such problem it work perfectly fine.maybe some of the new iPhone's 5 have some factory problem that happen most of the time and people have to visit the company when it happens.i dont think it is specifically problem with Apple Only. Many phone making company's face such problems. There are bugs in every 10 devices out of 1000 so the only reason is that nothing can be 100% perfect

I got through 3 iPhone 5's - all had the same problem. My father and brother are on 2 different networks, still they have the same problem.

There is a serious problem with the iPhone 5

  • R_odec Level 1 (0 points)

@ Connorclements , nothing wrong with your Iphone5, see my previous posts, it depends on your provider, if they support HD voice = NO problem with the Iphone

If they do not= BIG problems on your Iphone.

I had 2 months of robotic voices, call dropps, muffling sounds, the provider officialy told me that they do not support HD voice, I changed to another provider who is supporting HD voice and since then (for about 3 months now, NO MORE PROBLEMS !!!!!, I never changed my iphone5, it is still the same.

I admit that Apple should make an option available to the settings of the iphone where you can enable or disable the option for HD voice, this should make it possible for everyone to use the iphone, if you now have a provider that is not supporting it, you can not use your phone like it should, so nothing wrong with the phone but an option is missing, so Apple, please a quick upgrade of the IOS with the simple option enable or disable HD voice and everyone will be happy ;-)

Ok went back to the store this weekend, there they said I'd best change my SIM card, because, according to the sales guy, the chipped SIM cards might cause the problem. Well apparantly they don't, because I still have the same problems, even with a new SIM card. So went back to the store today to hand in my Iphone. Should receive a new one within 2 weeks. Hope the new one works better.

This really shouldn't happen with a device that costs so much.

I joined this forum after googling my problem. I too am experiencing a ridiculous amount of static when making calls. It doesn't matter if I have 1 or 5 bars, LTE or Wifi; it still happens. I am on my 3rd sim card and 4th iPhone 5 (thanks to cosmetic issues). I live in Nashville, TN and am on AT&T. My 30 day return window is up on Friday. I spent 2 hours on the phone with AT&T trying to resolve this last night. They basically told me there's nothing else they can do and feel free to switch providers. This is so frustrating. I have a great grandfathered plan and would hate to give it up. I love the phone too.
