Help, my iPod's not working right.

Help. I unfortunately downloaded iOS 6.0 to my iPod touch and now it's not working right. I can't listen to anything in the itunes store and a song I tried to download doesn't work on my iPod, yet it works on my computer. Is there anyway to go back to the old OS system I had before this one? Is this happening to anyone else? What can I do?

iPod touch (4th generation), iOS 6

Hello,

You can try to reset the Device:

Hold the power button and the home button down until the device shuts off, then power it back on and see if the problem is resolved.

And if you really wanted too, it is possbile to downgrade, although Apple no longer supports it.

See the link below.

I hope that helps.

Hi Lt. Leviathan.

I tried your reset suggestion and it sort of worked, so thank you very much. After it powered back on, I went to the iTunes store and tried to sample some music and it was now audible. It was dead silent before. Unfortunately, the song I downloaded earlier still will not play on my iPod. I wonder if something went wrong with the download. I know I'm revealing how clueless I am by asking this but, ...should I delete the newly downloaded song that wont play, and if yes, ...how?

I've tried swiping every which way over this song. Nothing. No options to delete come up. But I realize what you mean because I tried swiping over another song just to see, and an option to delete came up. I hit cancel because I want to keep that song. The one that wont play is the one I want to get rid of, but it wont give the the red delete option. What now?

Thank you for all your advice. I'm going to try a "re-sync" tomorrow. And by that I'm guessing you mean I should plug my iPod into my computer via a USB cable, and let the iTunes Library sync up with my iPod? That sounds like a good plan. I'll try to find this post again tomorrow, to let you know if it worked. Either way. Thank you very much for taking the time to try and help me. I may be a bit techno challenged, but I appreciate my little iPod so much that I hope I can get it back to how well it functioned before this "upgrade" tricked me into believing it was the right thing to do. It would be nice not to be bombarded with upgrade offers so often. The "cancel" button, or "ignore" button needs to be pressed more often and I need to remember; if it aint broke, don't fix it. 🙂

Good Morning DeeKnicki,

Yes, to sync the device plug it in to the computer via USB cable, and open iTunes. But it might not sync

automatically depending on how things are set up. To ensure that the device syncs, select your device in the left-hand panel in iTunes, and click sync. (Right clicking will bring up a context menu and you can chose sync there. Left clicking will open the device in iTunes and there will be a button that says sync on the bottom right side of iTunes. Whichever one you find easier to remember or find, either way will do the job.)

Updating when you really don't need it can do those kind of things, sometimes they address little bugs, or in this case, introduce new features. (even though this one came out full of problems) But if you are not a "technical" person or "just want it to do the things you need it to do", then I would suggest not updating. If the message comes up in iTunes in the future, select "Don't bother me with this again" checkbox (or something along those lines) and then select ignore. Do not do that for this next update however. This next update should fix a lot of bugs it has brought in, and make your device work the way it should without all these little, and big, problems.

Don't worry about being "techno challenged", there are plenty of other people who don't know, or even care much about those kind of things. And I'm sure there are lots of people out there to help you out when you need it. We all have things that we are better with, and things we aren't.

I hope everything works out well for you.

I'm always glad to help out.

P.S. You should always be able to find this post with the notification e-mail that you got to notify you of this very message, incase you need to refresh yourself on the instructions.

Hello Lt. Leviathan,

Just a quick reply to tell you how things went. I tried syncing my iPod to my iTunes Library on my computer. Nothing changed. I still had a song I purchased from iTunes listed in my iPod that wouldn't play and I couldn't delete. But I wondered why it was fine, unaffected, on my computer. So I decided to copy the song into my iPod, manually by dragging and dropping while connected via USB. Then I had 2 copies of the same song on my iPod – one that played, and one that didn't. That could have been the end of it, but little things like that bug me, ...so I kept trying to find a way to delete the vacant song. I went to the iTunes store, but only found a glitch when trying to play the song in question. Frustrated, I went to the Apps store, where I was alerted about 2 more updates I should get for unrelated apps. I signed in, viewed all my current apps, (there's not many,) ignored the updates, and then signed out. When I went back to my music on my iPod, I found that I now had the option to delete the empty song which still didn't play. Yeah! (I don't know...)

So for now, looks like all is well and my iPod Touch and I are back on speaking terms! Hopefully, this wont happen again next time I download a song from iTunes, although I'm a little worried. So, you're saying, the next time I get a notice to upgrade my iPod Touch, (sometime this October?) I should do it, because it will fix these bugs? Okay. But maybe after that, I'll hit the ignore button. If that sounds about right, I'll sign off, saying Thank you for your helpful suggestions, and for replying so quickly. You Rock!

Sincerely, DeeKnicki

You are very welcome! 😁

It would seem that the problem was that you were not logged into your iTunes account on your device, and logging in fixed it.

That is great! You did well in your troubleshooting. I'm glad you got it fixed. Sometimes, just messing around with it, trying to figure it out helps.

As for updating, it would be good to do as I suggested, but I don't know what Apple's next update will hold for our devices. Whether it will fix only some, or all of the problems. So I would say that keeping an eye out, maybe on this forum, for results of the next update, whether or not it helped others, and how much it fixed. It may even take a few more updates for it to come back around to working as it should. Once your device doesn't seem to be full of errors and bugs, (and maybe the Apple forums are full of positive reviews) then you can stop updating. I'm not saying that updates are always bad, it is hard to tell. So if your comfortable with how your device is working, then you can choose to ignore future updates, it's your choice. I don't know when the updates are coming out either, so we are all riding it and seeing how it will turn out.
