Is anyone else's iPhone 5 getting hot when an app is running for more than a few minutes?
When I run any app for longer than a few minutes (maybe 5) my phone starts to get very hot. Anyone else having this?
iPhone 5, iOS 6

Yes I'm having the same issue with my iphone 5 and my battery life can go from 100% to 70% within 10 mins too.
I have not had battery issues, but the heating is worrying me.
yes I have been having issues with my new phone only when I use 4G. the battery ***** and is drained shortly after a full charge. wifi is fine... I'm so ****** off about this. I might just boycott the iPhone 5 if the issue continues. shape up APPLE. not looking so genius anymore. ugh.
I notice it is also getting hot when I am making calls. I'm going to an Apple store today and see what they have to say
My phone can also run hot and drain the battery very quickly. It doesn't seem to be consistent.
Yes, mine does the same.
I was running downloads from the app store that took forever! i was then playing angry birds while waiting, the phone rear case near the bottom and the side near the bottom almost got too hot to handle, i decided i best stop. It used 30% battery power in 20 minutes. It did cool down once i stopped the download and the game. it gets very hot no matter what game i play.
The battery in my iPhone 4 used to go down 5% per day with my normal usage, so far the 4S does 19-20% and my nice new iPhone 5 has gone down 30% so far today with the same usage pattern i always use. this is with 1 30 second call and looking at emails for 4 minutes.
I thought it was supposed to be better than the 4/4S?
I talked to Apple support and he claims he hasn't heard of these problems. I'm going to Genius Bar today.
My iphone 5 gets hot after a few minutes & my battery goes down about 10% every half hour. I have notifications off, not using wi fi or bluetooth & I have no apps. I have used the phone for a few calls & a few text messages & that is all. This is my 2nd phone in 5 days, it happened with the first one & apple store just replaced with a new one. I went back again today because I see no difference with the 2nd phone. Today my Genius bar guy said he has not heard of any problems like mine (I told him to look on the internet including Apples own site & he will see many complaints) he said there is nothing wrong with my phone & Apple is not going to give me another phone since they already did that. He basically told me that is the way the phone is. I am a new iphone user so he also told me I just didn't know how the iphone is. He said the phones get hot but its ok because there has never been a case of anyone getting burned & if it got to hot I would get a message on the phone. I am sorry but that is not a good enough answer. I have had a blackberry for years & it never got hot & my battery would last over a day. I am not of the "genius" caliber but I think something is wrong so I plan on returning my phone, I will go back to a blackberry. I am not happy I thought Apple was better. In the time it took me to write this my phone just lost 3% of battery. How can this be right?
I also have a new iPhone5 that is getting hot during phone calls. I don't us it for games so there are no apps running in the background. My iPhone4 did not get this hot. Also my reception seems to be worse than the 4.
I made a phone call that was a total of 25 minutes. No apps were open. When I hung up, my phone was hot...I'm just stating how I used my phone and what I noticed. If it keeps happening, I will of course troubleshoot which may include: power off/on..restore..make an appointment at the Genius Bar or call the Apple Care peeps.
I noticed that My iPhone 5 gets really hot when there is poor data service. Looks like iPhone 5 can not handle situation when there is no or little data. iPhone 4s I had never did this.
It gets so hot and looses charge rather quickly.
Well I posted the same question in this forum, altough my phone does not always run hot adn when it does its rather very warm but not hot. It happens when Im in poor service area (2 bars) and talk for 5 minutes. When Im in perfect reception area (5 bars) the phone stays cold even if I talk 15 o rmore minutes! I can conclude that this has to do with increasing power radio transmission that runs CPU and power to antenna higher resulting in more heat. This rather seems to be normal. Could be also because I had wi-fi and bluetooth turn on at the same time.
When you do not use bluetooth, turn it off otherwise it will keep scanning for bluetooth devices and use more battery power.
I'd say as long as its not uncomfortable to handle when you use it, just warmer than other phones its normal. This phone is like a mini computer with fast processor, its processor is faster than previous precedessors. It will of course run hotter. We're talking about dual core 1 Ghz processor, with accelerated GPU, fast memory, cellular radio, etc.
If its too hot, see if turning off few functions like GPS, bluetooth, Siri helps. Close apps you don't use. If its no help, restore your phone with iTunes and if this all fails, then go to genius bar and have them check hardware issue. Keep your phone away from dust, moisture, avoid shock just like with any other electronic devices.
I respectfully disagree. Nothing should have been designed to run hot on phoes unless you stress it to its limits.
Just talking (****! that is the basic function of a PHONE) should not heat up the phone, signal or no siganl.
Now this is not the only smart phone in the market. This particular phenomenon is new to me, I have used minimum 7 different smart phones (incliuding iPhone4s), never seen any behavior like this. I have full signal but bad data, and it heats up. I know if I do not have good data while my phone is in the pocket, I FEEL it!
Yes, it does not really get hot, it warms up enough to drain battery like crazy!
Iphone function uses built-in app just like any other app you run on the phone. And this app does more to run than let say Pandora streaming music app. The aluminum back acts not just as design but also as a piece of metal to transfer out heat and ensure optimal temperature inside components, especially when it is hot outside (35C). the plastic on most phones acts as heat insulator but it also traps heat. When you have everything running on phone, bluetooth, wifi, LTE, apps it stresses CPU. When cell tower is far away, it needs to increase power of internal antenna to maintain as much strong signal as possible. (Have you ever wondered why your phone may not have as much bars when its in standby as when you talk or use data? ) This all requires more power from battery and in turn drains power and heat.
I have every freeking problem on my iphone5 as described in all the forums here... dropping signal when LTE is on , horrizontal lines in app store , dimming of screen to minium by itself, it dosent reconnect to signal if i am out of coverage area for more than 10 mins like in my lab which in in the basement, it gets too hot after a few minutes of gaming, and battery *****.
Now the best part they replaced my phone and my replacement phone has the same all problems , so i know this is in all the phones for sure ( because my friends have the same problems in their iphone5 as well) and NOW WE CANT EVEN RETURN OUR PHONES BECAUSE THEY HAVE BEEN REPLACED. FCUK you apple and your iphones. As holes. They fcukng tricked me into replacing my new phone with a service phone so that i cant return it.
I have 64GB white ATT.
