iPhone 5 bought in the USA does not send text messages in Russian networks

When I was buying it in an American Apple Store the salesperson said that it will work fine with European, Russian and any other sim-cards. But in practice I have problems with sending SMS (voice calls, 3G and receiving messages work perfectly). Perhaps I should change the number of SMS center? Is there any way to do it?

Pavel,

I have the similar issue and contact local mobile operator MTS. Support service provide me instruction how to setup proper SMS centre number. Procedure known for a while and you can read about there:

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2550684?start=0&tstart=0

BUT even SMS centre number fixed iPhone 5 still can't send SMS mesages.

It seams that iOS 6 uses some internal number from itself, ignoring this value. It is really disappinting considering sales person in store message that this full price contract free phones should work in other contries GSM networks.

Question to developer's is: can we get a fix?

Thanks,

Ilgar

Some people say: only iPhone 5 that initially had a Sprint sim-card inside have this problem.

My device had a Sprint sim-card inside.

Ilgar, what about yours?

I tried to set the message centre number with command *5005*7672*+79262909090# (It’s for local mobile operator Megafon). But it did not fix the problem.

Now I can check my current message centre number with command *#5005*7672* My device replies the correct Russian number - +79262909090

And I still can’t send SMS messages.

The same question to developer's is: can we get a fix?

Contract free is not an unlocked iPhone. The iPhone is still

locked to the carrier and you must contact that carrier to see

if they offer unlocking and if you qualify. Currently there is no

unlocked version of iPhone 5 available in the US.

What does it say when you look at Settings=>General=>Carrier?

The iPhone 5 uses a micro SIM card - are they available in Russia?

Cutting down a mini SIM has been reported as not successful in

most cases.

I'm using a Nano SIM sold by my carrier. The iPhone was bought in US full price contract free, and the guy in store gave the information it should work in GSM networks of other countries, but not in other CDMA networks.

Actually everything works fine, voice calls, MMS, 3G, even receiving SMS, but not able to send SMS. That is the only issue.

Pavel, Colleagues,

My mobile carrier is MTS (Russia) provide me Nano-SIM and iPhone 5 works fine with GSM Voice, EDGE and 3G mobile data. Now I am in roaming and no issue with services I mentioned.

BUT as I wrote before Then MTS support line provide me procedure of fixing message center number. Same way as you did. Even I can see correct messaging center number (+79168999100 for MTS Russia) after that I still can't send SMS.

Dear Imobl,

Sure when you check in Settings=>General=>Carrier you see local GSM carrier name. Actually in Russia it was "MTS", in roaming now it is "KZ KCELL" (GSM operator in Kazakhstan).

Regarding problem: To me it seams that programmer writing iOS 6 code in "Sprint" version does not check the value in settings. He just have the Sprint messaging center number in code.

For my understanding It is not a "lock behavior" in any form. Locked phone shouldnot allow GSM radio come up and work for main services. It just a bug for my understanding.

Same here in Vietnam, everything works fine except sending SMS, no problem with the local carrier Viettel

IronMan 2000 got the point, I think also it's an iOS problem and we need Apple and/or Sprint action fast, if they can not they shouldn't sell full price this model to people who specified the way they want to use it and need to find a solution, we all have our receipt mentionned the model/ the price ... I have send it already to Apple support but for the moment no answer.

They should action fast because "no capabilities of sending SMS for the iPhone 5 A1429 on GSM network" is really a bad joke and internet media love that

iPhone 5 bought in the USA does not send text messages in Russian networks
