When putting the phone up to my face when I make a call, the screen doesn't hide now in iOS 6.

After updating to iOS 6 last week, when I place a call, the screen doesn't hide. It stays lit during the whole call, causing major problems. This problem mutes the call, tries to Facetime with random people, brings up the keypad dialer, etc.

I've reset the phone twice now. Nothing. I've looked through the settings on the phone. Nothing. I've looked through these forums. Nothing.

I'm guessing this isn't a widespread issue or I would have heard about it by now.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a problem with your proximity sensor tha may simply have been coincident with the update. Have you tried reseting your iPhone by pressing and holding the power and Home buttons until the silver apple appears? If that doesn't resolve it, you may have a hardware issue. Make an appointment at the genuis bar at your local Apple Store.

Best of luck.

You are not alone. I noticed this problem yesterday. Call screen stays lit during calls and I have inadvertently muted conversations several times when holding the phone to my ear. Can't be that proximity sensor went bad coincidentally for multiple users after the update to IOS 6. Has to be an IOS 6 issue. I am using iPhone 4 from Verizon.

It's not just Verizon either, I'm on AT&T and am having the same issues. Totally unacceptable that I can't use my phone without hanging up on people!! I simply cannot conduct all of my business from speakerphone, but it's literally the only way I can guarantee not hanging up/muting in the middle of it. Also keystrokes and apps have been lagging majorly since the update. I figure we have to wait until the next update for it to be fixed...but I'm just so frustrated I needed to share. If anyone finds a better solution than waiting (the hard restart does not work, have done it once a day since the dreaded update) put that stuff here please.

You've already responded to this issue when I first posted it. I said that it's not the case causing it. I've removed the case and it still happens. This only started happening with iOS 6, as evidenced by the other users in this thread. So far it seems to be a minority of users, but this is definitely a problem.

Allan --

I have figured out the problem.

The problem wasn't the case, but it wasn't a software glitch, either.

My specific problem was that the plastic screen cover that I used along with the case had started to come "unglued" from the screen around the proximity sensor area. I checked this numerous times, but today I finally just ripped off the screen shield. I didn't want to do this because I don't want to have to buy another screen shield/cover, but it looks like that's what I'm going to do.

Thanks for everyone's help here. The proximity sensor is very sensitive, apparently.
