Hi
I have a new iphone 5 with ios 6 etc.
Occasionally I get a mail notification in the lock screen that:
a) shows a preview even though previews are switched off, and
b) Is for a mail that doesnt appear in my inbox.
I'm not sure if these relate to old emails or new ones that are being downloaded and then deleted or something. It's very strange...
Some emails come in with no preview and appear ok.
Anyone else seeing this?

Thanx goClimb for raising the issue. I had the same problem and thought I's was imagining things. I really hope to get an answer to why it happens and hopefully this "Ghost email notification" issue can be solved ASAP. Thanx.

That is a hard one, because I know there was a bug somewhere back in the day where people would get emails with no subject or body that the date received showed dec 31st 1969 and it was iOS specific. Usually though I would say for some reason your ESP is sending a bad email and the phone doesn't realize that nothing really showed up in your inbox so it still pushed the notification.
However my gut instinct is that this is an iOS but with a particular ESP. Whom is your email service provider? Have you tried any troubleshooting at all (as in remove and readd the email account?)
Here is a list of things you can try
remove and readd the email account
turn off your notifications and then toggle them back on
even resetting your network settings might do it
of course resetting the phone may also fix this issue
I would even go as far as to restore the device to see if the software is gliched that controls the notifications.

Thanks for that Jon... I have tried pretty much everything you listed and it still happens. I also noticed an increase in the number of instances where mail shows its downloading emails but then nothing appears in the inbox. This happened on my iPhone 4 with previous iOS too.
I'm not sure if its happening on my iPhone 4 as well since upgrading to iOS 6, will find out in then next few days. I have cancelled the contract for my iPhone 5 as O2 (British provider) made such a mess of porting my existing number that I had no email,text or voice mail for a few days. The 5 is being returned to the store and its back to my iPhone 4 :0(

I have a iPhone 5, with the latest upgrade iOs 6.0.1
I have a company exchange email account on my phone which I have had since iPhone 3 came out. And never have I had this issue as now. I have a number (1) on my email icon, and when I go to see it, I see the 1 in my company email but there is no email there. I hae moved all my emails off the account, so that my iPhone has 0 emails in the account, but still the GHOST email still exsist. This must clearly be an iOS issue right? I would prefer to get this solved via a fix than to have to re-set the phone completely as I have 20-25 GB of stuff on it, and it is just a pain in the a.. to have to reload it all back in again.
Anyone out there find a solution that actually worked?
