iPhone 5 Rattle

Tap on the top of my iPhone 5 and you get a rattling sound from inside the hardware. Wouldn't be horrible but it effects two other things. First when I speak with someone, if they talk even slightly loudly, I can hear the piece inside rattle, creating a horrible metallic sound. Second when my phone vibrates, it has a very harsh sound. I took my phone to the Genius bar just now and they checked other iPhone 5's in stock -- they all rattle. The Genius told me, "I don't know what to tell you." If this is normal, I'll return it. This can't be intended...

Hi Gandalf,

I feel the same rattling when I tap the back of the phone near the camera. I confirmed it, my iPhone 4 does it too, but the rattling is less. I am not sure though what is it. Whether its just design, or is there seriously something wrong inside the phone. Considering that my 4 does it too, I feel a little better. I googled about this, a lot of people had the same issue with 4S, and its probably the camera optics. Anyhow, I will be taking my phone to the Apple store and get it checked. Let me know if you find something too.

If it's the same rattle I am hearing when I tap the back of the phone near the camera then I'm pretty sure it's nothing to worry about. From the sound of it, there must be a small gap between the back cover and the logic board. So it's not really a rattle, just the noise of you tapping the metal back of the phone making it sound like a rattle. That's what it sounds like to me anyway. also looking at the Ifixit iPhone 5 teardown it kind of looks like there is a gap there also.

I have called Apple Support both in the US and Asia, everyone I spoke with said "It's Normal". It's really odd for a phone to produce that kind of sound when tapped. I can only wish they can resolve it and recall these units, which I doubt to happen. Oh well.

Hey all,

My phone also has a rattling sound. From what I can tell, it's nothing to worry about. The sound is really coming from two separate locations. The sleep / wake button at the top and the home button below. If you lightly tap on either button, without fully depressing it, you will hear the sounds causing the rattle. I have witnessed no misfires when fully depressing either button. So long as that doesn't happen, I think we are in the clear. Hope this helps!

It's definitely the autofocus as mentioned above. It is also normal,in most cases. The Nokia Lumia 900 had the same rattle, though, with that phone the vibrator was near the camera lens causing a horrible rattle every time it vibrated. At least it's not that bad :)

If you listen closely to the lens when in camera mode, then switch to video mode, you can hear a similar tap as autofocus is disabled. That's the source of the sound.

took mine into the apple store. store manager working there showed me his. it did the same thing as mine but even worse. said it was normal and that it was designed into the phone to keep something from breaking.

not sure how true that was but. its clearly a known condidtion. and everything on my phone works as it should.

so, i guess we'll have to wait and see if anything is announced...
