It should be Mail 4.6 (1085)

Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1, repair permissions and restart your computer afterwards.  Check your Mail version and report back the results.

    Hi,

I donwloaded and installed the suggested update, restarted and I still get the same error message. I have also made sure the mail app is in the application folder. I have also previously tried re-installing the SU 2012-004.

I appear to have 2 mail apps - 'Mail' is version 4.6 but does not have the usual mail icon. The other 'Mail (original)' icon is verson 4.5. Please see below:Screen shot 2012-09-26 at 00.13.47.png

    Thank you for your help!

    You did not  repair permissions?

Mail 4.6 appears to have a generic icon.  Repairing permissions should have corrected that.  Try the following......

    Trash the Mail 4.5 icon.

Disconnect all peripherals from your computer.

Boot from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.

    Select your language.

Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.

    Select Disk Utility.

Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.

    Click Repair Disk.

    Restart your computer when done.

Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2963 and restart your computer.

If the error no longer appears and Mail 4.6 shows the correct icon, empty your trash.

Nothing to do with the suggestions you are being given. Basically, find Mail.app and make sure it is sitting by itself in /Applications. Then get the Security Update and run it again. You're getting that message because the update changed Mail to version 4.6, but it's looking at the old Mail, which is now incompatible. The update failed because it couldn't find it where it was supposed to be.

If that doesn't do it, some other things to possibly try in this by now very long thread.

This is an ongoing bug in Mac Mail.  Messages get stuck in the outbox.  I just finished deleting two emails from the outbox because they were not delivered in time to be useful.  I am using Version 4.6 (1085) and regularly repair disk permissions.

This has been a problem ever since I've owned my MacBook Pro (about three years).  Apple seems unable or unwilling to solve it.  They are following the lead of Microsoft -- Outlook has had the same problem for a decade.  Come on, Apple!  We buy your products because they work.  Please don't force us to go back to Windoze.
